Obituary

Alan Carlon Goodman passed away Sept. 26, 2023.

An excellent life has ended and sweet memories of Alan remain.

He was born Sept. 29, 1947, in Binghamton, N.Y., the son of Dr. Carlon H.M. and Evelyn (Dickow) Goodman, RN.

He was raised to be a gentleman and respect people, nature and music; long summer vacations on a family boat helped to foster his love of reading. Saying Alan was an avid reader is an understatement. He would spend hours enthralled in a good book and he loved to share books with anyone that he could.

His entire family was musically talented. As a child, Alan played the trumpet and continued to do so into college, becoming a member of the Hobart Marching Band. Alan loved to hear a marching band play.

Classical music was always tuned in on the car radio and the sound of bagpipes always brought him joy.  Alan proudly served in the USAF in the Viet Nam era as a journalist, a job he was well suited for as a natural story teller. His view of the world was shaped by being stationed in Greenland and various other locations.

Alan's travels would continue to places like Indonesia as a plant manager of a door manufacturing company in Florida. Never shy to go anywhere and try exotic food and customs, he loved to tell people of his exploits. Alan owned a photography studio in Tampa, Fla., and the Fox Farm Cafe in Wilmington, N.Y.

He also worked for NFIB, a small business lobby group; there are so many things he learned to do and could always do whatever he put his mind too. He was a board member, photographer and member reporter for the first 25 flights of our local Honor Flight chapter; he loved doing stores about other veterans, including the local chapter of CVMA.

Alan retired after 22 years with the Press-Republican as a district manager for Circulation. He delivered newspapers until his final week.

When the boys were young, Alan was thrilled to coach T-ball and Little League teams. He loved soccer and basketball games, and then came Boy Scouts and cheerleading, living a very full life with his family.

A Celebration of Alan's Life will be celebrated on Sunday, October 8th from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the VFW Post 125, 116 Boynton Avenue, Plattsburgh.  Military Honors will take place at 2:00 p.m.
