Alba C.
Chilton
July 23, 1917 – July 6, 2020
PLATTSBURGH--Alba Cubit Chilton, 17 days short of 103 years old, died Monday, July 6 th , 2020, after an exceptionally long, happy and fruitful life. Alba was the beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many.
Alba was born in Ellenburg Center, NY on July 23, 1917 to Kenneth and Belle Cubit. She began school at age four in the one-room schoolhouse where her mother was the teacher. Graduating from high school at age 16, Alba went to Plattsburgh Normal School (now SUNY Plattsburgh) graduating in the class of 1936 at age 19. She also received her Masters in Education from SUNY Plattsburgh. Alba initially taught elementary school in Bolton Landing, NY, leaving that position to return to Ellenburg Depot to marry her hometown love, John Neil Chilton in 1940.
John and Alba lived and worked in Ellenburg raising a daughter, Linda and a son, Terry. Alba returned to teaching at Northern Adirondack Central School until her retirement. Many former students kept in touch with Alba, their favorite teacher, long after Alba left teaching.
Alba was an active member of the Ellenburg Depot Methodist Church where she held many offices; a member of the Women's Society Christian Service and belonged to Mt. Hermon Chapter #653. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and in 1979 was the Grand Chaplain to the Sisters of N.Y., O.E.S.
John and Alba moved to the Hobbs Road in Plattsburgh in 1986 to be closer to son, Terry, daughter-in-law Kate and grandsons, Dan, Thomas, and Kelly.
Alba had a goal of doing a kind deed every day. She volunteered at the Plattsburgh Methodist Church, visited home-bound friends, and wrote letters to long-lost friends and relatives. She delighted in life's little pleasures – a country drive on a Fall day, a chocolate ice cream cone, a piece of pie, any kind, and visits with family and friends.
Alba wrote volumes in her journals, and saved mementos from all her outings, restaurants, school plays, grandson's sporting events, to insert into her scrapbooks. She loved gardening, going to the movies and NBA basketball. Alba never missed a basketball game that grandson Dan played in. Alba relished the visits from the California folks, daughter Linda, son-in-law Dr. Jeffrey Pomerance, and granddaughters, Elise and Michele.
Alba had a deep love for family, traveling with husband John, taking care of her elderly mother, encouraging her son and daughter, spoiling her grandchildren. Granddaughter Elise said "She was the most amazing Grandma. I couldn't be more grateful."
Alba's positivity, curiosity and exuberance for life made her so easy to love and so hard to miss. Alba was pre-deceased by husband John Neil Chilton and daughter, Linda Pomerance (Jeffrey).
Left to cherish her memory are son Terry Chilton (Kate), Plattsburgh, NY, grandsons Daniel Chilton (Alicia) S. Burlington, VT., Thomas Chilton, Brooklyn, NY, and Kelly Chilton, Washington, D.C. Also, son-in-law Dr. Jeffrey Pomerance (Andrea), Pasadena, CA, granddaughters Dr. Elise Pomerance, Pasadena, CA and Michele Pomerance, Glendale, CA and many nieces and nephews.
Much appreciation to the wonderful, caring staff at Meadowbrook Nursing Home where Alba resided from ages 100 – 102+. Special thanks to neighbors Randy and Patti Trombly for the many years of looking after her on the Hobbs Road.
A private memorial service will be held Friday, July 10 th at the Sheldon Hill Cemetery in Ellenburg Depot, NY
Memorial donations in Alba's name may be made to either the Alba and John Chilton Scholarship Fund at NAC, Ellenburg, NY 12933 or the Plattsburgh Methodist Church.
