Obituary

CHAZY - With profound sadness, we announce that Ann Ryan, 90, of Route 9, passed away at home on February 19, 2025.
Ann was born on August 25, 1934 in Plattsburgh, to the late Monroe and Elsie (Wood) West.

She graduated from Chazy Central Rural School in 1952 and went on to attend Canton ATI, where she received her Associates Degree as a Dietitian in 1955.

As fate would have it, while living in Yonkers, NY, she went on a blind date and met the love of her life, Jeremiah Ryan. The two were married on February 14, 1956, and settled in the North Country, which together they called home for the next 64 years until his passing on December 24, 2020.

Ann worked as a receptionist and switchboard operator at the CVPH Medical Center for many years until her retirement. Over the years, she was a member of the North Country Square Dance, and a volunteer religion teacher and walker with Chazy's Sacred Heart Parish Religious Classes.

Her family finds peace in the belief that upon her passing she was greeted by the saints and angels and those loved ones who preceded her in death, including her husband, her parents and brother, William West.

She is survived by her brothers Richard (Nilah) West, Robert (Mary) West, and Bruce (Jane) West, sister-in-law, Kathleen Ryan; children, Catherine (Jeffrey) Trombly, Timothy (Kathleen) Ryan, Patrick (Julie) Ryan, Margaret (Joey) Ryan, and Amanda (Christopher) Latremore; grandchildren, Dan (Marianne) Ryan, Kevin (Ashley) Ryan, Caitlin (James) Inglis, Jeremie (Samara) Latremore, Nolan (Madelaine) Ryan, Gaelan (Gena) Trombley, Perry (Bianca) Latremore, James (Diana) Trombly, Megan (Patrick) Ogden, Devin (Tommy) Manning, Sagan Trombley, Brendan (Jenissa) Ryan, Maura (Shamus) Trombley, Corey (Zeynep) Ryan, Josh Pearo, and Zach (Ellen) Pearo; twenty-three great-grandchildren and counting; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Most commonly referred to as Mom, Grandma, and Hun, Ann's love and devotion to her family were evident to all. Her affectionate and maternal instincts were always on display, but none more so than when she had a baby or toddler nearby. From a young age, she doted on babies and loved having children around. No matter the weather, she'd often be seen covering babies with a blanket or sweater, making sure their feet were never cold. Over the years, if not cooking, you could find her sitting by the water at the family camp, with Jerry by her side, rocking a grandchild or great-grandchild.

A natural caretaker, Ann fed and cared for all those who came by her home, including family, friends, and—without question—the raccoons, wild cats, and birds that visited daily. Everyone knew that if they crossed her property line, they would be well-fed and not leave without having seconds! Most notably, Ann made a mean family-favorite dish of hamburger and peas with mashed potatoes. She was also known for her summer staples of potato salad, ice cream pies, and pudding dessert. As a dietitian, Ann always ensured the family was well-nourished—with fruit cups on the side of every meal, followed by a sweet treat (or two!). Up until her final days, she found joy in her daily cup of ice cream.

Beyond being a phenomenal cook and ice cream connoisseur, her consistency and presence will be remembered fondly. After retirement, it would have been a rare occurrence not to see her at a grandchild's sporting event, dance recital, school performance, or graduation. She always attended with a little gift in hand to celebrate the occasion. For someone with a lead foot, we are eternally grateful she was never pulled over —not necessarily for speeding, but for not being able to see out of the rearview mirror, which was covered with college bumper stickers proudly displaying the various schools and programs her grandchildren attended. She had a playful and mischievous side, always finding ways to make us laugh. Though Ann could be well-reserved, she often kept us on our toes, surprising us as she would fearlessly join her grandchildren on their motorcycles or go-karts for a ride. Her playful and youthful spirit, combined with her great sense of humor, made her a joy to be around. We'll miss her jokes, banter, and infectious smile.

Ann loved the holidays, most notably Black Friday—which, in the days before online ordering, she spent weeks preparing for. She would be up at the crack of dawn, in line to get the latest trendy toy for the Christmas season. She loved to browse stores and take shopping trips with her children and grandchildren. Throughout the year, family would often stumble across her in Plattsburgh at various shops, stopping to pick up little gifts, such as matchbox cars or TY Beanie Babies. As an avid mall walker and Auntie Anne's pretzel enthusiast, we knew where we could always find her if she was not at home or at church.

Our hearts are heavy knowing that physically Ann is no longer with us. We'll miss stopping in to see her—catching her sitting at the kitchen table watching the birds from the window or in the middle of a word search puzzle. However, we find peace knowing that she lived a full life, filled with love and laughter, and upon passing, was reunited with her husband, the love of her life, Jerry.

To join us in the celebration of her life, we invite family and friends to attend services in her honor on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 in Sacred Heart Church of Chazy, New York at 12:00 PM.  Burial will take place in the spring in the parish cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Chazy Volunteer Fire Department and the CCRS Education Foundation.
