WHITING, NJ – Annaliese Walther Goldenbaum, 107, of Whiting, NJ and formerly of Plattsburgh, NY passed away on October 16, 2020 at the home of her son.
She was born on September 25, 1913 in Geestemunde (Bremerhaven) Germany. Annaliese came to the United States in 1915 with her parents Anna (Schulze) and Karl Walther. She grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn where she graduated from high school before attending Hunter College in New York City.
On November 21, 1940 she married Walter Frederick Goldenbaum in St. Jacobi Lutheran Church, Brooklyn, NY: the beginning of a strong and loving marriage that lasted until Walter's death in 1961. She was also predeceased by her sister Elsie Gladstone.
Annaliese was employed as a nursery school teacher, a real estate agent but, for most of her career, she worked as an executive secretary at Lederle Laboratories in Pearl River, NY. Upon her retirement Annaliese moved to Oronoque Village in Stratford, CT and later to Maryland Avenue in Plattsburgh, where she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. The remaining years of her life were spent in Whiting, NJ.
Annaliese had a beautiful singing voice that earned her an invitation to audition for the New York City Opera in 1935 and sustained her throughout multiple performance ensembles from the Damenchor in Columbus, Ohio to the Rockland County Oratorio Society and multiple church choirs.
Annaliese was an avid traveler and visited many countries all over the world. Always very active, she played tennis into her 80's, earning Gold Medals in the Connecticut Senior Olympics. She also skied, swam and rode a bicycle well into her 90's. Annaliese enjoyed playing Bridge and was a member of the Plattsburgh Monday Club.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Walter C. Goldenbaum of Whiting, NJ; daughter Kathe Fairweather and her husband Malcolm of Plattsburgh; grandchildren, Gwen Fairweather Varady and her husband Eric of Newtown, PA; and Ian Fairweather and his wife Stacey of Bozeman, MT. Also left to remember her are four great-grandchildren, Windsor and Spencer Varady and Annaliese and Robin Fairweather, in addition to several nieces and nephews in the United States and cousins in Germany.
Due to COVID-19 a memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
