Arlene R.
Buran
April 22, 1929 – September 27, 2020
PLATTSBURGH – Arlene M. (Robinson) Buran, 91 of Plattsburgh, New York, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning of Sunday September 27, 2020 at home surrounded by her loving family.
Arlene grew up on Clayton Avenue in Vestal, New York where she graduated from Vestal Central High School. Later, she attended SUNY Binghamton, and afterwards, SUNY Plattsburgh.
Arlene was very active throughout her life. While attending SUNY Binghamton, she worked for IBM at their headquarters in Endicott, New York. After marrying Robert Buran, they moved to Syracuse where Bob completed medical school and an internship at St. Joseph's hospital. From there, they moved to Rochester for Bob's residency in radiology at Strong Memorial Hospital. And finally, they moved to Plattsburgh in 1958 where they would live and raise their family for the rest of their lives. In the 1960s she was a member of the hospital's Junior League that raised money for CVPH Medical Center. In the 1970s she attended SUNY Plattsburgh.
In the 80's, family friend and local/well-known businessman Paul Calkins asked Arlene if she would join his real estate firm, and she did. She was a realtor for over 25 years - later with friend, George Barnett, of Century 21, and afterwards with friend, Don Duley of Duley & Associates - during which time earned the designations CRS and GRI. Arlene was a member of the Clinton County Board of Realtors and became President, the CVPH Medical Center Foundation, the Plattsburgh State University College Foundation, and the Skating Club of the Adirondacks.
During the winters, Arlene enjoyed many years of skiing with her family and friends at Whiteface Mountain and had the good fortune to ski at several resorts in Colorado and Utah, her favorite being Vail. During the summers, she enjoyed golfing or just relaxing on the front lawn of her camp taking in the beautiful view of Lake Champlain.
But despite her work, civic memberships and her outdoor activities, what was most important to Arlene was her family. She spent tireless hours taking care of her children, her husband and her home, making it a special place for all of them. This was especially evident during the holidays when she would bake numerous treats for everyone she knew. In addition, she decorated her home that gave it a warm feeling that only she could.
Arlene is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Robert T. Buran, MD, FACR, of Plattsburgh, New York. They were married on June 21, 1952 at St. Ambrose Church in Endicott, New York.
She is also survived by her four sons; Robert W. Buran, CIMA, of Milton, Vermont, James M. Buran, MBA, of South Burlington, Vermont, Jeffrey J. Buran, MD, of Plattsburgh, and David C. Buran, Esq., of Milton, Vermont. She is also survived by her sister, Manilva Bentley, of Sun City, Arizona, and niece, Cindy Fulbright and her husband, Steve, of Sierra Vista, Arizona. Arlene was pre-deceased by her parents, Wesley and Edna Robinson, her brother Richard and her sister Dorothy.
