PLATTSBURGH – Bernard C. Amell, 94, of Calbi Way, passed away, Monday, September 18, 2017 at the CVPH Medical Center.

He was born in Riverview, NY on January 18, 1923 the son of Arthur and Cora (Strack) Amell.

Bernard attended Morrisonville High School and Mount Assumption.

He joined the Marine Corp in 1943 and was proud to be a Marine. During World War II, Bernard was engaged in action against the enemy in the Marshall Islands, Saipan and Tinian, with the 4th Marine Division. He was honorably discharged in 1945. In 2014, Bernard was honored and proud to have flown on the North Country Honor Flight.

Bernard was very active and involved in his community and in government affairs. He began working as a Corrections Officer and later retired after 25 years of service. Bernard also served as Chairman of the Town of Plattsburgh and Clinton County Democratic Committees, former Town of Plattsburgh Supervisor, former Clinton County Legislator and also served as the Clinton County Clerk for over 23 years. During this time he served as President of the County Clerk's Association, the college council, and was Sergeant of Arms at Governor Hugh Carey's Inauguration.

He was a life member of the American Legion, Post #1619, a member of the VFW Post #125, Marine Corp League, Elk's Club #621, a 3rd Degree Knight with the Morrisonville Council, Siberian Rod and Gun Club, and the CSEA Local #916.

Bernard enjoyed spending time hunting, fishing and watching his beloved Yankees play baseball. He also enjoyed his "Coffee Club" every other Tuesday, where he and his friends would meet and solve the world affairs.

Bernard had a true gift of making anyone he interacted with, family or friend, feel like they were his favorite!

Survivors include his wife, Shirley (Bushey) Amell of Plattsburgh, whom he married on May 20, 1995; daughters, Nancy (Elmer) Barcomb, Connie Barcomb and Joan Duchin all of Plattsburgh; step-daughter, Jacqueline (Michael) Bellew of Plattsburgh; stepson, Richard (Yanbin Bao) Bushey of South Carolina; summer son, Ralph (Diane) Thornlow of Brooklyn; two sisters-in-law, Betty Amell and Joan Amell; 16 grandchildren, Cheryl (James) Lucia, Craig (Christy) Stow, Dale (Mary) Stow, Sharlene Stow, Lisa Stow, Dean Stow, Eric Currier, Tammy (Edward) Trombley, Darryl (Sheila) Currier, Joseph Barcomb, Gina (Wally) Rickert and Alita (Mark) Desso; sixteen great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, his 1st wife, Anna Mae Rock in 1992; three sons-in-law, Harvey Duchin, MD, Jerry Myers and Henry Barcomb; grandson, Kirk Currier; one sister, Winifred Petrashune and husband Stanley; and brothers, Maynard Amell, Armand Amell and wife Betty, and Arnold Amell.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 22, 2017 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Peter's Church in Plattsburgh. Burial will take place at a later date in St. Alexander's Cemetery in Morrisonville.
