Bert T.
Doolen
September 9, 1956 – December 5, 2019
PERU - On December 5, 2019 Bert T. Doolen passed away suddenly at his home in Peru, New York, with his daughter Sara at his side. Bert had just returned from a trip to El Paso, Texas for Thanksgiving at his daughter Megan's home in anticipation of the arrival of his second grandchild, Edison....and, of course, in hopes of catching an action scene being filmed by the Live PD El Paso crew.
Bert was born on September 9, 1956 in Utica, New York to Loretta and Michael Doolen.
After graduating from Proctor High School in 1974, Bert enlisted in the United States Air Force as a Security Forces Specialist. Following an honorable discharge in 1983, Bert continued his service to the government with the Federal Bureau of Prisons as a Senior Security Officer assigned to FCI Raybrook, until his retirement in 2008.
As a professional, Bert had a keen since of right and wrong and mentored his co-workers, his brothers, with his strong work ethic, while at the same time entertaining them with his amazing sense of humor.
Bert enjoyed his family pets, football, history, reading - especially westerns and action/adventure sagas, and police documentary stories, but his greatest joy was his family. Bert was a "one of a kind" man and took special pride in his children and grandchildren.
Bert is survived by his wife of 36 years, Shirley McRae Doolen, his daughters Sara Doolen, Megan Doolen Braun (Jonathan), his grandchildren and proclaimed fishing buddies, Hattie Barbara and Edison Mac.
He is also survived by his son, James Doolen Wolf and by siblings Loretta Daniel, Bernadette Nasbe, Steven Doolen, Thomas Doolen and Christine Schwartz.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital 501 St. Jude Place , Memphis, TN 38105 ( Stjude.org ) or a charity of your choice, keeping Bert's big heart and loving spirit in mind.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 21 st at 12:00 p.m. in the R.W. Walker Funeral Home Chapel.
