Carl A.
Lutters
February 24, 1944 – March 14, 2026
Carl Abraham Lutters passed away on the morning of March 14, 2026, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was born on February 24, 1944, to Carl and Madeline Lutters, in the small town of Camillus, New York.
Papa Carl is survived by his children Darcy, Matthew, and Dana, their spouses, and his eight grandchildren: Ella, Elise, Elias, Emma, Dylan, Jake, Lucy, and Robin. Carl is survived by his brother Bill, his former wife Kris, and many friends. Carl is survived by his dearest friend and companion of the final twenty-five years of his life: Judy Cavanaugh.
After graduating from West Genesee High School, where he played multiple sports and was an excellent student, Carl enlisted in the Air Force. He joined the Air Force basketball team. He spent one year at Syracuse University learning Czech before he was stationed in Germany on the Czech border as a translator of air communications. While there, he bought a little car, a green Spitfire, and drove–and skied—throughout Europe.
Later, Carl returned to the US to study at SUNY Plattsburgh, and as part of an exchange program, enjoyed more time in Europe to study in Vienna. He finished his studies at Plattsburgh State where he earned a Bachelor’s and then a Master’s degree in Psychology. In 1973, he began his first and only teaching position; he taught students in the Psychology Department at Clinton Community College for thirty-two years. He led several sports and ski clubs at Clinton Community College. He will be remembered fondly as a remarkable educator, athlete, and outdoorsman.
Carl was most significantly a beloved father, grandfather, and friend. As a younger man, he was a deeply engaged father, sharing with his children his enthusiasm for the outdoors and the importance of leading a life of learning. He was a model of gentle warmth and kindness. He started up friendly conversations with strangers wherever he went, on every golf course in this area and along the east coast. In his older years, Carl hiked, biked, camped, and traveled with Judy, sharing many adventures and care for one another.
We will remember Carl when we drive the long way home, when we stop at every yard sale in sight on a spring morning, when we canoe quietly on Chazy Lake, and in the simple acts of love and care we show for family and friends. Carl will be deeply missed.
A family gathering to celebrate Carl’s life will take place at a later date.
