Obituary

PLATTSBURGH – Carolyn W. Burakowski, 90, of Plattsburgh passed away Wednesday, 15 September 2021, at Albany Medical Center after a short illness.  She was born Carolyn Alberta Weatherwax on August 17, 1931, the daughter of Thomas E. and Carolyn Mae (Kurtz) Weatherwax.  She graduated from Rouses Point High School in 1948 and attended Paine Hall in New York City receiving certification in 1949 as a medical secretary/assistant.  She went on to receive her Master of Arts Degree in General Studies from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1980. In 1952, she married Joseph E. Burakowski in Plattsburgh.  Joseph passed away in 1971.  They had four sons, Joseph Jr. of Erie, PA, George of Los Angeles, CA, Thomas of Oakland Park, FL, and Steven of Jacksonville, FL, all who survive her.  She was employed by SUNY Plattsburgh as an Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Education from 1968 until her retirement in 1993.  Carolyn worked 22 years as the Executive and Assistant Treasurer for the Lt. Governor Thomas F. Conway Scholarship Administrative Board.  She was interested in her Weatherwax ancestry and conducted extensive genealogy research on her family tree.  Mrs. Burakowski was a choir member at St. Mary's of the Lake Church on Cumberland Head and at St. Peter's Church in Plattsburgh.  She enjoyed gardening and working crossword puzzles, and was a member of local golf and bowling leagues.  It was not unusual for her to bowl over 200 and get her name in the local newspaper for the accomplishment.  Carolyn is predeceased by her sister, Louise Ryan, who died in 2009, and granddaughter, Amber Eleanor, who passed away in 2015.  Besides her four sons, Carolyn is survived by her son's Steven's partner, Gladys Serrano, a granddaughter, Deanna Burakowski of Newport News, VA, and two great grandchildren, Lydia Pekrul of Plattsburgh and Landen Burakowski-Palase of North Carolina.  A niece, Fredda (Toodie) Ryan Rancourt of Hartford, CT, also survives her.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, September 21, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home.  A funeral service will be celebrated Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Church followed by burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Rouses Point, NY.
