Obituary

PLATTSBURGH - Dr. Carrie R. Harris, 94, of New Hampshire Road, passed away on June 11, 2022 at her home.

Carrie was born in Kansas City, Kansas on December 16, 1927.

She was the first in her immediate family to graduate from high school and she did so at the top of her class with a scholarship to a junior college in hand, then on to Kansas State University where she went to further her education.

Carrie had a lifelong conscious determination regarding her education, continuing to strive for her bachelor's degree, taking off every other year to earn enough for tuition for the following year. While lovingly and single-handedly raising her son over the years, Carrie continued onward eventually receiving her masters and doctorate from the University of Massachusetts.

Dr. Harris was particularly proud of her promotions to Associate Professor and to Director of the Human Resources Center, SUNY in Plattsburgh (PSUC). She joined the PSUC faculty to teach nutrition and played a significant role in the establishment of the college's hotel-restaurant management program.

In 2003, Carrie was honored by the American Dietetic Association for her 50-year membership, both in San Antonio and in Plattsburgh. At the Fifty Year membership tea, she was especially pleased to see Wilda Okeke, an American Nigerian who was instrumental in helping her set up a nutrition project which she led in Enugu, Nigeria in 1965. Carrie was active in the ADA, serving on its board of directors; and was a former chair of its Council on Education.

Consummate world travelers, Carrie's and her husband Denton's traveling picked up exponentially following her retirement in 1997. They particularly enjoyed the Smithsonian Museum cruises for their educational classes. Cruises included visits to the Mediterranean, Italy, Monte Carlo, France, Spain, Gibraltar, Canary Islands, Antarctic peninsula, and Prague to name a few.

Carrie's loving husband of 33 years Denton Harris, and her devoted son Larry Johnson predeceased her in 2012 and 2014.

Carrie is survived by her cousin Beulah Louise Penny, her daughter-in-law, Jeanne Pardee; and by members of Denton's family, including her stepdaughters, Julie Fisher, Pattie Trifero (Joey) and Wendy Boyd (Keats); his niece, Marla Simpson; his grandchildren, Sean, Cora Lou, Lindsey, Jamie, Ilya and Anya; and his great-grandchildren, Taylor and Cole.

A private graveside service will be held at the Central Cemetery in Orange, MA.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Carrie's long-time devoted caregivers, Carol and Alonzo Dagley, what lovely friends they were to her over these years following the loss of her husband and son; also, the family so appreciated the kindness of Nora Baratto, Carrie's social worker, and her many loving hardworking caregivers both past and present, all were such a blessing to Carrie and her family.
