PLATTSBURGH---Craig Lozier Sample, left our planet on December 10, 2014. He was born and grew up in Brooklyn and Manhattan. He played piano and alto sax in small neighborhood bands in the late 50's and early 60's. Craig's undergraduate degree is from Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus. He graduated magna cum laude in 1964. His Master's and Doctorate in French and Romance Philology was earned from Columbia University. Craig was named Columbia Scholar Abroad for the 65 and 66 school years where he continued his French Studies at the Sorbonne in Paris. He began his career as a lecturer at Columbia then joined the Foreign Language Faculty at Plattsburgh State. This turned out to be a 43-year sojourn of teaching and administrative work. He won the New York State Teaching Excellence Award. He truly loved learning as well as trying to find new ways to make others life-long learners. Craig was active with the Friends of Point au Roche State Park and worked with Literacy Volunteers of Clinton County. He was a Mensa member for many years. His predicted 2-year battle with colon cancer lasted for 4 hard-fought years. Thanks in no small part to the outstanding care administered by the nurses and staff at Fitzpatrick Cancer Center under the direction of Dr. Duus. He is survived by his wife Alice; 3 brothers-in-law and their wives Bill and Cheryl, Joe and Suzanne and Dennis and Connie (all Henningtons); many nieces and nephews; his 2 four legged companions and the myriad of students whose lives he influenced. There will be no services at Craig's request. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Literacy Volunteers of the North Country, the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center or Child Care Council / Family Connections.
