PLATTSBURGH- David N. Mowry of Plattsburgh, New York, passed away Monday, April 22, 2019 at home.

He was born June 18, 1941 the son of Helen Cady Mowry and Newell W. Mowry.

He was retired from the State University of New York where he was a Philosophy professor and Director of the Honors Program for 25 years.

He earned his bachelor's degree from SUNY Oswego, attended the University of London, Kings College and earned his Ph.D from Boston University.

He came to SUNY Plattsburgh in 1971where he taught Philosophy and founded the Honors Program, which he directed for 25 years. In 2001 he became a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor and held the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching.  After retiring he received the Plattsburgh College Council's Distinguished Service Award.  In 2018 the Honors Center Seminar Room B where he taught many classes was named the David N. Mowry Seminar Room.

He is survived by his wife Ruth Hagen Mowry, his daughter Melissa M. Mowry, his grandchildren, Helen M. Margaret Hale-Mowry and David Alexander Hale-Mowry, his brother Olin Mowry and his brothers in law and their wives, William Hagen and Kathleen McCarney, James Hagen and Bonnie McKenzie, and Peter Hagen and Bonnie Savage.

Calling hours will be held at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon, April 30 from 2 to 4 pm. There will be a celebration of life memorial service at the Valcour Educational Center Boathouse, Saturday, October 5 in the afternoon from 1-4 pm.
