Obituary

PLATTSBURGH – David J. Tallman (NK2Y) 77, loving husband, father, and grandfather, of Tom Miller Road, passed away on May 14, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family.  He was born in Plattsburgh on April 22, 1944 to Frederick and Grace (Wright) Tallman. After graduating from Beekmantown Central School and Plattsburgh State University with a degree in Education, he joined the United States Navy.  Following his military service, David became a teacher at Northern Adirondack Central School, an adjunct professor at PSUC, and an inspector for United States Customs and Border Protection in Champlain NY until retirement in 2009.

He married Margaret Hagan in Oneonta, NY on December 26, 1970. They had three children: Charles, Bruce, and Robert.

Dave was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church of Plattsburgh where he was a former Trustee, Chair of the Church Leadership Board, and a member of the Choir.

Dave was heavily involved in volunteering within the community. His memberships included the Champlain Valley Amateur Radio Club (CVARC), Adirondack Amateur Radio Association (AARA), Amateur Radio League (ARRL), New York State United Teachers, and Champlain Valley Council of Retirees. He was also a volunteer for the Interfaith Food Shelf.

Dave initially became involved with the Boy Scouts of America while his sons were young and served in many positions including Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, ADK Council Camping Chair, Champlain District Chair, and Charter Representative for Scouting Units 8039. He was a BSA Silver Beaver Recipient.

Dave enjoyed reading, fishing, riding his Harley and growing in life with his grandchildren.  He never stopped teaching as he mentored new Ham Radio Operators as Course Director for Amateur Radio licensing courses in Plattsburgh and Saranac Lake.  A trip to Ireland was a highlight of his adventures.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Tallman of Plattsburgh, NY; two sons: Charles (Christina) Tallman of Saranac, NY, and Dr. Robert (Elizabeth) Tallman of Williamsville, NY; brothers: Dr. Frederick Tallman of Northfield Falls, VT, Alan Tallman of Cohoes, NY, and Richard (Louise) Tallman of St. Albans, VT; grandchildren: Taliesin Tallman and Rhiannon Tallman; 4 nieces and 6 nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and a son, Bruce Tallman.

A memorial service will be held at the Plattsburgh United Methodist Church, 127 Beekman St, Plattsburgh, NY on Saturday, July 10, 2021, at 3 P.M. on the front lawn of the church, weather permitting.  It will be moved to the sanctuary for inclement weather.  David died on May 14, 2021.  Participating in the service will be members of the church, Scouts, and other community members.  A picnic reception will follow.

Memorial donations may be made to the Champlain Valley Amateur Radio Club, Scout Unit 8039 Campership Fund, or the United Methodist Church of Plattsburgh.
