Deland T.
Averill
March 13, 1964 – September 28, 2020
Deland T. Averill, 56, left this physical world and crossed into the next on Sept. 28th, 2020, at home surrounded by his loving wife and children trailed by sawdust, some odd screws, and nails, and our abundant love for him. Born in Plattsburgh and raised by coincidence on the same street in Chazy as his future wife, he moved south after graduation. There, he worked for George Hunt Construction, Cast Crete as a welder, Holley Wood Floors, and Hoboken Wood Floors. Finally settling back in Chazy, he married Kathy in 1989 and worked as a union carpenter/foreman for 29 years and owned Averill's Hardwood Floors for over 20 years.
His joys were woodworking, telling jokes, you-tubing recipes and the satisfaction of a job well done. He was the storyteller of our tribe. He was, he said, most proud of his long happy marriage and his children. His four grandchildren who called him "Grampy" brought him such joy. When he laughed, he laughed with his entire body into a full open-mouth belly laugh and he would pound the nearest surface, saying "oh my god." He was never dying. He lived, rode his Harley, took trips, hunted, made plans, loved, and laughed- regardless.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 31 years, Kathy LaDue-Averill, three children of whom he was immensely proud: Caitlin King (Jeremy), Caroline Averill (Chet Wysko), Nicholas "Nick" Averill (Alyssa Bordeau}, four grandchildren: Avery, Elijah, Lillian and Madison. Two sisters: Donna Stevens (Dennis), Debra Hanrahan, and one brother Dennis Averill (Pamela). Several nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends, and union brothers.
He is predeceased by his parents Donald and Katherine (Kuhl) Averill and one brother Donald "Spike" Averill.
Burial ceremony will be at the Chazy Sacred Heart Cemetery, Saturday, October 10th, at 11 a.m. A celebration of life will be later that day beginning at 2 to 4 p.m. at Vesco Ridge Vineyard, 167 Stratton Hill Rd., West Chazy. Masks mandatory unless seated. All adults welcome, come join us as we fulfill his wishes: to gather, remember, share stories, laugh, then bid him farewell for now.
