Dolores A.
Farrell
June 20, 1932 – May 28, 2023
Dolores Ann Farrell, 90, passed away May 28, 2023, in Plattsburgh, N.Y., with her loving family by her side. Ann, as she preferred to be called, was the daughter and only child of Harold and Merrill (Vredenburg) Reynolds. She was born in Kingston, N.Y., and spent her childhood in Woodstock, N.Y., living near her grandparent's farm and boarding house. Ann shared so many stories of growing up with extended family, musicians and artists staying at the boarding house, farm chores, one room school house and the many highs and lows of her life in Woodstock. Here she learned to sing, play piano and accordion, and picked up her skill of cooking from her mother; family favorites were her potato salad, apple pie and raspberry jam. After high school she attended Plattsburgh State University, graduating from and obtaining her Nursing degree in 1954. Ann's nickname during her college days was "Sam," a name which stuck with her throughout her lifetime; she was known to her grandchildren as "Nana Sam." In her college days, she met her life-long friend Mary Smith "Smitty" Robitaille whom she loved like a sister. The two jokingly referred to each other as "Sam" and "George," nicknames that remained to this day. While finishing her degree, she met James (Jim) R. Farrell and was married on April 10, 1954. As the family grew, they moved to a house on Prospect Ave in Plattsburgh, and established many lifelong friendships in the neighborhood. Ann coordinated the foster care and adoption placements of Catholic Charities in Plattsburgh. After leaving Catholic Charities, she had a deep desire to care for newborns, and the Farrells fostered 26 babies until adopting Devin in 1980. Her love of singing led her to join the local Sweet Adelines. In the summer months, Ann could be found with her family at their beloved camp on Chazy Lake. She spent a considerable time at camp as master at the game of Scrabble. As she rarely lost, she became known as "Scrabble Ann." Her love of word games continued in recent years with the addition of Wordle and Words With Friends. Some of her fondest memories were spent with Jim, the family, and friends at the quiet, idyllic and cozy camp they called Glendalough.
It was in the Prospect Ave days that Ann experienced the tragic loss of her oldest son James ("Jef") in 1985. Jef's strong Christian faith was a witness to Ann, and she accepted God's gift of Salvation through Jesus Christ soon thereafter. This was a life changing experience for Ann and this faith guided her for the rest of her life, impacting the family through generations. Her desire from then on was to witness to others so that they too might experience peace with God through the love of Jesus.
Ann is survived by her children, Stephen and JoAnn (Rigsby) Farrell, Betsy and David Sheats, Michael and Anne-Marie (Hostetler) Farrell, Sara and Ronald Giambruno, and son-in-law Edward Kline. She was the beloved Nana Sam to the extended Farrell family: Bryan Allen (Jil), Kayleigh Jackstadt (Peter), James Farrell (Meghann), Chelsey Remillard (Joshua), Cal Michael Farrell, Levi Sheats (Katherine), Livingston Sheats (Elizabeth), Bailey Sheats, Kolin Kline (Lacey), Audrey Kline (Rachel), Candace Kline, Keenan Kline (Kiana), Ashley Gryder (Joshua), Ryan Kirkpatrick (Susanne), and Joseph Kirkpatrick (Brittany), Marnie (Giambruno) Shore, Jennifer (Giambruno) and Bryan Gordon, and Anthony Giambruno, as well as 24 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband James, her oldest son James, her daughters Katherine and Mary Margaret, her son Devin, and her grandchildren Amanda Kline and Alix-Anne Farrell.
Arrangements are entrusted to the R.W. Walker Funeral Home of Plattsburgh.
A memorial service in Ann's behalf will take place on July 3rd at a location to be announced. She will be laid to rest with the Farrell Family at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Plattsburgh.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Salvation Army.
