Obituary

PLATTSBURGH – Edward William Briggs 87, of Plattsburgh passed away at the Plattsburgh Rehabilitation and Nursing Center with family by his side.

Ed was born on December 10, 1936 in Syracuse NY to Pauline and Edward Briggs. He grew up in Mattydale where he developed his love for sports. He excelled in baseball, basketball and football. His love for sports would continue his entire life whether it was playing on various local sports teams or supporting his professional teams, the Atlanta Braves, Denver Broncos and Syracuse Orangemen. After graduating from North Syracuse High School in 1956, Ed enrolled at Syracuse University where he played on the Orangemen's junior varsity basketball team. He left the university when he enlisted in the   United States Air Force.  Ed eventually landed at the Air Force Base in Plattsburgh NY where he met his beloved first wife Kathleen who was the mother of his four boys.

After serving in the Air Force for four years, he made his home in Plattsburgh where he began his career for the United States Plattsburgh Postal Service, retiring in 1991.

He and Kathy were married on October 17, 1959 at St. John's Church. They were married 35 years before Kathy's untimely death on June 10, 1995.

Ed was known by many names such as Dad, Pipper, Pop-Pop, Skunk and Homer. But the name most people would come to know him by was Spike.

Spike was a beloved fixture at his favorite social haunts, Fitzpatrick's and his home away from home, Bobby's Lounge.

We are grateful to the patrons and staff who loved and cared for him, particularly in the last few years, often escorting him safely home. Ed was loved by many and will be missed terribly.

Survivors include his three children Jeffery Briggs and wife Nadine of Westford, Ma, Steven Briggs and wife Sandra of Arizona and Edward Briggs and wife Wendy of Peru, NY.

In addition to his children, he leaves behind his grandchildren, Steven Briggs Kelcey and Keagen Briggs Megan and Trent Briggs, one brother, Kenneth of Syracuse NY and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, first wife Kathleen, son Michael and second wife Carole.

The family would like to thank the staff of Plattsburgh Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for their love and care of Ed for the past six months.

A funeral service will be held at R.W. Walker Funeral Home on Friday, September 27th at 4:00pm in the funeral home chapel.

A Celebration of Ed's life will be held at Bobby's Lounge immediately following the service.
