Edwin "Ed"
Hewitt
September 4, 1948 – October 30, 2023
PLATTSBURGH- Edwin "Ed" Hewitt, 75, of Bateau Way, Plattsburgh, passed away Monday October 30, 2023 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Plattsburgh on September 4, 1948 the son of Ashley Hewitt Sr. and Dora (Comstock) Hewitt. After graduating from Beekmantown High School, Ed enlisted in the US Army proudly serving our country from 1968 to 1971 and continued to serve in the US Army Reserves until retiring as a Sergeant. He married the love of his life Wanda Reid in 1971 at St. Alexander's Church in Morrisonville and they spent 53 wonderful years together. Their love was a special one and especially since his retirement, you rarely saw one without the other. Ed was a Correction Officer at Clinton Correctional Facility for 31 years.
Ed had a quiet strength about him, he was a hero to his family, a protective family man, and exhibited an incredibly strong moral compass. He was a man who loved his country, never complained, and always put others first. He was generous, dependable, and always available to his friends and family to lend a hand. He loved to hunt and fish and was an avid fly fisherman who tied his own flies as a hobby. He was skilled at grilling and famous in the family for his BBQ bacon cheeseburgers. He was always happiest when he was surrounded by his family.
Left to cherish his memory include his loving wife Wanda (Reid) Hewitt of Plattsburgh; his daughter and son-in-law Derek Bechard and Melissa (Missy) Hewitt-Bechard who was the epitome of a Daddy's Girl, and his beloved granddaughter Sophie who was the absolute apple of his eye and his pride and joy. A sister, Candace Rugar, several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; John Orlowski, Betty and Larry Baker, Richard Reid, Gail and Kevin Baker, Dale and Judy Reid, Dianne Prell and her companion Denis Bouvier, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his mother and father, his brothers and sisters; Margie Orlowski, Ashley Hewitt Jr., Glen Hewitt, Carol Vassar, Lynn Labombard, and Penny Wood. His father-in-law and mother-in-law, Orville and Goldie Reid, and a brother-in-law Mark Reid.
