Herman Gerald
Brunelle
July 26, 1938 – August 23, 2021
PLATTSBURGH – Herman Gerald Brunelle, Sr., 83, formerly of Dannemora, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 23, 2021 at CVPH Medical Center, finally being reunited with his wife. Having most recently resided at Pine Harbour Assisted Living, Herman fought a courageous battle with Dementia.
Herman was born at home in Dannemora on July 26, 1938 the youngest child of Wilfred and Ida (Provost) Brunell. Herman graduated from OLVA in 1955. Upon graduation, he went to work for the State of New York retiring on August 7, 1980 from the Taconic Correctional Facility as a Sergeant due to illness. Herman served as the Dannemora Town Justice for many years; he earned his realtor license; took courses in the field of appraisal; served for many years on the school board of the Dannemora Union Free School; was selected to represent the District on the Board of BOCES. Herman was also a member of the Dannemora Lions Club and served the Christmas Bureau for the needy children of the Town of Dannemora. He performed countless wedding ceremonies across the North Country. Herman took great pride in providing more than a civil ceremony. He was known for his gift of gab and his countless jailhouse stories. There was no short story for Herman. He loved a good game of Yahtzee, and loved to roll the dice.
On November 1, 1958 he married the love of his live, Audrey Joan Hall, at First Church, Albany, NY. Audrey was the daughter of the late Charles and Ruth (Brooks) Hall. Audrey predeceased him on May 8, 2011. Herman was thankful to the end that Audrey came to college in cold, blustery Northern New York. Audrey vowed to never live in Dannemora (after seeing all the cars coming to Plattsburgh covered in snow), but did so for more than twenty years for the love of her life. After Audrey's death, Herman's life was ever the same and he felt very alone in the world without her.
Herman and Audrey were blessed with four children, Herman Jr., Kathleen, Amy and Tara. They made their home and raised their children in the home that Herman was born and raised in. Although they lived a simple life, they lived loved traveling, long Sunday drives, attending professional baseball games and dining out. They were fortunate to have visited the Bahamas, Barbados and Puerto Rico. They enjoyed summers at the camp on Little Wolf Pond in Tupper Lake, where Herman could be found on the front porch with his binoculars keeping track of everything going on around the small lake. They enjoyed being snowbirds in Florida until Audrey's health made the trips no longer possible.
Herman died a practicing Catholic. Although he did not regularly attend Mass for far too many years, on March 1, 1992, Herman put on his suit and walked through the doors of St. Alexander's Church, reconnecting with his faith. He believed with all his heart that an angel was brought into his life in late February with a purpose.
In addition to his wife, Herman if predeceased by his parents, his sisters, Marilyn (Mattoon), Gloria (Delaney) and Rachel (Dwight); his brothers, Eugene, Bernard and Robert; his brothers-in-law, Donald Hall, Frank Appeal, George Mattoon, Richard Dwight and Richard Delaney; his sisters-in-law, Ellen Burke, Barbara Appeal, Ellen Brunell and Theresa Brunell.
Herman is survived by his son, Herman Jr. (Erika) Brunelle of Saratoga Springs, NY; his daughters, Kathleen (Bruce) Gray and Amy Reisdorf of Plattsburgh and Tara (David) Lawrence of West Chazy.
