PLATTSBURGH – Herwood "Woody" J. Mayo, 91, formerly of Church Street, Chazy, passed away on Friday, September 17, 2021 at Meadowbrook Healthcare.
He was born in Plattsburgh on July 5, 1930 the son of Millard W. and Nettie (Brown) Mayo.
Herwood graduated from Chazy Central Rural School, took post graduate courses at Plattsburgh High School and attended Champlain College in Plattsburgh.
He married Joyce Kinney on October 2, 1954 at St. Peter's Church in Plattsburgh.
Herwood was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Chazy, Elks Club in Plattsburgh, Lions Club in Chazy, Chazy Volunteer Fireman and served as a Commissioner for Chazy Fire Department.
He was a dedicated volunteer for many years at Chazy Central Rural School in Mr. Craig Duprey's third grade class.
Herwood retired from U.S. Customs after 31 years of service. He also owned and operated Mayo's Garage, a Pontiac dealership in Chazy.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Mayo of Plattsburgh; sons, Michael Mayo and his wife, Margie of Sun Valley, Nevada, Daniel Mayo and his wife, Tammy of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and Todd Mayo and his wife, Patty of Plattsburgh; daughters, Pamela Mayo Hamel and her husband, David of Daytona Beach, Florida and Julie Collins and her husband, Jack of West Chazy; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Millard G. Mayo of Wethersfield, Connecticut.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home. Masks worn by all attendees would be appreciated by the family.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, September 23, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Chazy.
Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
