CHAZY LAKE— Howard Elias (better known as Pete) Barber has passed from his earthly life into eternal life to join his parents and brothers on Wednesday, January 30, 2019. He was born to Ross W. and Beatrice M. (King) Barber on May 21, 1941 at Chazy Lake, NY. He enjoyed growing up in Chazy Lake with his brothers and many close cousins, aunts and uncles.
Pete graduated from Ellenburg Central School in 1960 and then went to work for Baily Motors in Dannemora where he remained as parts and service manager for 15 years.
In November 1963 he joined the US Army Reserve, becoming an army cook.
On June 6, 1964 he married his sweetheart, Mary Laura Eggleston, at St. Joseph's Church in Dannemora. In 1970 he started a family business (Pete's Sales & Service) in Dannemora, which remained active and successful for 35 years under the operation of Pete, his wife and children.
He was elected to the office of Highway Superintendent for the Town of Dannemora in January 2004, an office he held for 9 years, retiring due to health problems.
In 2000 he and his wife built a lovely home on the lake in Chazy Lake where he also built a wood working shop, known as Pete's Wood 'N' Stuff. Many residents in the area have enjoyed many of his wonderful creations. Due to the onset of dementia, he had to give up his woodworking in 2015. In 2004 he helped to organize a band, called "The Back Porch Band", for which he was their emcee and played the mandolin and rhythm guitar for ten years. Pete was known as the Man who could fix anything.
He also has been a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus as a 3rddegree knight.
Besides his wife, Pete is survived by his three children and their spouses, Bruce and Sonya (Noel) Barber of Dannemora, Amy O'Neill and Keith O'Neil of Mooers, and Perry and Suzanne (LaDuke) Barber of Dannemora. Also a very special granddaughter, Janyll Barber of Dannemora. He is also survived by his two sisters-in-law Phyllis Barber of Malone, Jane Barber LaLonde of Potsdam, brother-in-law Danny and Sister-in-law Jo Eggleston of Saranac and sister-in-law Barbara and brother-in-law George Malloy of Albuquerque, NM and several nieces and nephews.
Pete was predeceased by his parents, brothers Tony Barber of Malone and Wilmer (Bud) Barber of Dannemora, many aunts, uncles, cousins and parents-in-law Millard and Eleanor Eggleston of Dannemora.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, February 4, 2019 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11:00 am at St. Joseph's Church in Dannemora. Burial will be at a later date in Independence Cemetery in Saranac.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Pete's memory to Dannemora Fire Department, Lyon Mountain Fire Department or Hospice of the North Country.
