Updated service information for Mr. James Evans: A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, May 15, 2023 at Riverside Cemetery in Plattsburgh, NY.
James Allison Evans, 78, of Plattsburgh, passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2022. Born in Ludlow, Massachusetts on October 3, 1944, James was the son of the late Alison (Moncrief) and Spurgeon Evans. James Evans was a devoted family man, always offering his help and advice when needed.
James grew up raising sheep as a 4H member, was a muscle car enthusiast, and assisted his father as an electrician at the family run business 'Evans and Sons'. James went on to receive his master electrician license in the state of Massachusetts. Over his career as an electrician, he worked with his father, Friendly's Corporation, and Ludlow Manufacturing Mills.
James went on to receive a master's Degree in Theology and Philosophy from Bangor Theological Seminary in Maine. He was the Minister for the United Church of Christ in Elizabethtown and Lewis, NY from 1982-1987. James guided and helped many during this time, as well as, officiated many weddings and funerals as minister. Upon leaving the full-time ministry, James returned to being an electrician working for Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh, NY until his retirement. After his retirement from the hospital James drove banking paperwork around for Wells Fargo to various bank locations.
For over 20 years, James continued to pursue the ministry by filling in for many ministers within the local area of Plattsburgh when called upon. James filled in for Chateaugay, Chazy, Lyon Mountain, Rouses Point, and other surrounding congregations.
James was an avid collector, especially of die cast cars under the moniker of "Matchbox Jim". He was a life-long New York Yankees fan having seen some of the greats play in person. He liked playing the lottery and scratch off tickets. He even won pieces of the old Yankee stadium by second chance prizes from the New York Lottery. As a member of the 4H, he was the Massachusetts representative to the 1962 Nation 4H Convention in Chicago. He also enjoyed being a part of the Franklin Mint Society, as well as being a National Geographic collector. James also had a job in the Peace Corps in the mid 60's. He was also a life-long reader of theological books to history books. He had a great singing voice, being a part of many choirs over the years. He also took pleasure in watching wildlife from the lake view apartment he lived in with his wife for more than 20 years. He always had pets favorites being: Rammy his prize winning ram, Duchess the van dog, and Mickey their cat.
More than anything James loved spending time with his family. When his sons were younger he took them across the country several times. As they grew up he loved seeing the family expand. He often took his grandchildren to school or picked them up, always having munchkins at the ready. He was always bragging about his three granddaughters and family to anyone who would listen.
He is survived by his wife Christina (Gentles) Evans. Together they shared 53 years as husband and wife. He will be missed by his loving children James Evans and his wife Cindy of Plattsburgh; Brian Evans and finance Jane of Niskayuna; grandchildren Kimberly Evans, Lauren Evans and Breanna Evans; and great-grandchild Alaina Evans. He also leaves sister-in-laws Martha Evans of Charlestown, RI, and Sandy Evans of Ludlow, MA, as well as many nieces and nephews. Sadly, he was predeceased by his first grandchild Kaitlin Evans along with his brother Bruce, brother Robert, sister Margaret and her husband John Peterson, and brother-in-law James Gentles.
