DANNEMORA - James Hassel, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at the University of Vermont Medical Center under hospice care, after a courageous battle with dementia and Parkinson's disease. Born on October 10, 1941, in Sharon, Pennsylvania, James led a life filled with love, service, and warmth.

James was the cherished son of Charles Edward Hassel and Margorie Hopkins. He was predeceased by his loving parents, his wife Susan Hart Hassel, whom he married on March 17, 1960, his brother Chuck Hassel, sister Judy Hassel Marimpietri, and his dear daughter Tina Hassel Doran. He is survived by his devoted daughter Sherry Hassel, who was a constant source of strength and joy in his life.

James was a proud graduate of Brookfield High School in Ohio. After high school, he served his country with honor in the U.S. Air Force from 1960 to 1964.

Following his military service, he dedicated over 30 years as a manager at IGA in Dannemora, where he was known for his friendly demeanor and ability to connect with everyone he encountered.

Family was the cornerstone of James's life. He was a doting grandfather to Dylan, Cameron, Terry Doran, and Kirsten Doran Escoe, whose husband Josh was also dear to him. His great-granddaughter Addison Escoe brought an undeniable sparkle to his eyes. His son-in-law Terrence Doran and sister Donna Dunham Comstock were also cherished members of his family circle.

James had a zest for life that was evident in his many hobbies and interests. He was an avid bowler and fisherman in his younger years. After retirement, he found joy in gardening and frequenting the casino. He was a devoted fan of NBA basketball, always cheering for the Lakers and the Warriors. His favorite holiday was Christmas, a time he treasured sharing with his grandchildren.

Known for his outgoing and friendly nature, James had a special knack for teasing those he loved, bringing laughter and joy to all who knew him. His absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in James's memory to the Dannemora Fire Department, an organization close to his heart.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to James's long-time medical provider Tom Gavin, his recent medical team at Plattsburgh Veterans Services, the dedicated staff at North Country Home Services, especially his two wonderful aides, and the compassionate staff at UVM Medical Center and Hospice for their unwavering support and care.

James's legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched.
