Obituary

Janet (Jan) M. (Zubinsky) Tuomey (BSN, Med., MSN) 87, lifelong resident of Plattsburgh passed away peacefully at home on November 8, 2021.

Jan was born July 25, 1934 to Anthony Peter and Josephine (LaJoy) Zubinsky of Plattsburgh.  Janet was predeceased by her only sibling, her sister Gail Calongne, also of Plattsburgh.

Jan was predeceased by her husband James W. Tuomey.  Jan and Jim married July 23, 1956 in St. Peter's Church in Plattsburgh.  They met at CVPH where Jan worked as a nurse, until she followed her passion to teach nursing at CVPH School of Nursing and Clinton Community College.  Jan was one of the lead instructors of the nationally recognized Registered Nursing program, until her retirement in 1998.

Jan held her friendship with 3 of her nursing colleagues dear.  Mary Jane Miranda, Phyllis Thompson, and Barb Shave were wonderful friends. She traveled with Phyllis to several Caribbean Islands and to Canada while researching her genealogy. They supported each other and kept in touch through the pandemic, and maintained at least weekly lunches throughout their retirement up until Jan's passing.

All who knew Jan, knew of her delight in flower gardening, and her love of animals. Her knowledge of plants, planting and her eye for beauty were her passions and the place where her spirit soared.  Jan was a lifelong learner and she took up wildlife photography, genealogy, stained glass art, and computer use in her active, "Retirement."  Jan volunteered at the local elections, as well as at the local animal shelter.

Jan enjoyed sharing her knowledge of plants and planting with her close-knit neighborhood where she lived.  Her, "Yard-garden," was featured on the Plattsburgh Garden tours, and she relished the opportunities to share her joy of her garden space with all who were interested.

Jan was survived by her 3 children Kevin, Scott and Lianne Tuomey, and her 2 nephews Tony and Mike Calongne of Plattsburgh, and numerous nieces and nephews on the, "Tuomey," side of the family.

Mom taught us self-sufficiency, independence, and to follow our own paths. She decorated that path with a love of the natural world, and an appreciation for its beauty.  Thank you, Mom. We are saddened by your passing from this world, but carry all you have given to us in our hearts.  With love and gratitude…Kevin, Scott and Lianne.

The family is planning a celebration of Mom's life in the spring in an outdoor garden where her spirit will join us!  Please check this space for the date and location to be announced.

In lieu of flowers please send donations to Elmore's SPCA in Peru NY, or the nearest No Kill Shelter near you.
