Jean E. Stone, 96, also called PAPA Smurf, of the Sunset Playboys, passed away on June 25, 2026, with his loving family by his side. He was born in Plattsburgh on May 8, 1930 the son of David and Philomena (Bechon) Stone.
Jean graduated from Plattsburgh High School in 1949. He served in the United States Air Force from January 1951 to December 1954. Jean worked at various service stations until starting work at Beekmantown Central School as a Bus Mechanic in 1962, retiring in 1992. He was a life time member of the V.F.W. #125 and also a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #20 and the Malone Moose Lodge #1479.
Survivors include his sons, Steven Stone and Brian Stone; daughters, Susanne Stone and Brenda LaMoy and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as three great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Freda; brothers, David, Floyd and Norman Stone; and sisters, Virginia Facteau and Felinda Rock.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 from 10:00 to 11:00am at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 in the funeral home chapel. Entombment will full military honors will follow at the Town of Plattsburgh Mausoleum on Tom Miller Road.
Donations in Jean’s memory may be made to Hospice of the North Country or American Legion Montgomery Post 912.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to UVM Emergency Room, HCR, and Hospice of the North Country. The family is forever grateful to Jean’s extended family and staff at 260 Lake Street in Rouses Point.
