Obituary

PLATTSBURGH – John Francis Hollop, 89, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 19, 2019 at the CVPH Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Oswego, NY on February 21, 1930, son of John L. and Frances (Brown) Hollop.

John graduated from St. Paul's Academy in Oswego, and later attended the SUNY Teachers College at Oswego where he received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees. John then continued his education at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

He served in the United States Navy from 1949 to 1953. During his military service, John served during the Korean War on the USS Harlan R. Dickson (DD-708), working the fire control system. John retired from SUNY Plattsburgh after 26 years as a Professor in the Math Department.

Everyday, he would be sure to read the paper and watch the television in order to keep up with national and world news, along with politics, sports, and the stock market. John loved playing the piano during his younger years, and never stopped enjoying listening to the Oldies. Most evenings you could find him watching a movie from Netflix. John did a lot of travelling, mainly through Europe, and was always interested in the etymology of a person's last name. He was really proud of his Bohemian ancestry.

John was a life member of the Oswego Elks Lodge #271 and the VFW Post #125 in Plattsburgh.

Survivors include his devoted wife Ludmila of Plattsburgh; sons, John Hollop and his wife Cara of Albany, NY and Dr. Antonin "Tony" Hollop and his wife Dr. Stephanie Hollop of Burlington, VT; daughters, Elizabeth Hollop of Sussex, England and Jennifer Kekis and her husband John Kekis of Albany, NY; grandchildren, Gabriel, Daniel, Alice, Tessa, Jacob, Jordan, and Kara; and one great-grandchild.

John was predeceased by his parents; his mother and father-in-law, Frantisek and Marie Sukup; and his brother-in-law, Dr. Frantisek Sukup.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 23rd from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 4:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will take place at a later date in the Czech Republic at his wife's family plot.
