Obituary

PLATTSBURGH – John E. Moschelle, Sr., 89, of Smith Dr., passed away Friday, July 15, 2022 at Meadowbrook Healthcare Facility in Plattsburgh.

He was born in Utica, NY, on January 13, 1933 the son of William and Katherine (Schelenbaur) Moschelle. He graduated from Cortland University with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Physical Education. John married the former Mary Jane Altamuro in Herkimer, NY.

For most of John's thirty-five years of teaching, he was at Cumberland Head Elementary School. He helped start up Beekmantown High School Bowling and Hockey programs. John coached football, basketball, golf, bowling and hockey. He also went on to coach football at Plattsburgh State for three years.

John's strength was working with the "Little Ones", he loved teaching elementary children and they loved him. Students still remember him and the life lessons he taught. To this day his students remember the big oak tree out back and that it was a rite of passage to make it to the tree and back. He had soccer, wrestling, and basketball tournaments both within the school and with some local area schools. He had Super Field Days culminating in the big run around the school grounds. Everything he did was through strength and loving compassion. The Cumberland Head children truly had a wonderful male role model to look up to. In 2018 John was the recipient of the Ray Holmes Memorial Award for his 35 years of devotion toward Physical Education with enthusiasm, passion, and determination.
