John W.
Nephew
December 15, 1937 – May 12, 2023
PLATTSBURGH – John Weir Nephew passed away on May 12 th at Pine Harbour Assisted Living, surrounded by loving family and devoted Pine Harbour caregivers and friends. John was born December 15, 1937 in Plattsburgh, NY. He was preceded in death by his mother, Katheryn M. Weir, father, Charles T. Nephew Sr., brother, Dr. Charles T. Nephew Jr., niece, Tia A. Ayres. and brother-in-law, Denis J. Chasse.
John was a Colony Liquor representative for 40 years and earned many awards for his salesmanship. He attended St. John's School, LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY and graduated from St. Michael's College in Burlington, VT with an Honors in English. He also attended Albany Law School until the death of his mother in 1961 precipitated his return to Plattsburgh to assist with the family businesses. John served in the Army Reserves and was a member of the Elks Club.
John was always an industrious young man. He started as a paperboy at the age of nine years old, and sang at funerals and weddings. He also played drums at St. John's Academy, piano under tutorship with his teacher, Al Delano, and sang in Le Moyne College's quartet. When he returned from law school, he worked at the family businesses, American Oil Company, Nephew's Liquor Store in downtown Plattsburgh and local gas stations. However, John has always felt his largest accomplishment was the fulfillment of his children's graduations and the building of their fruitful lives. John will always be remembered for his inimitable sense of humor, his generous giving to everyone he loved, his musicianship, and his many lasting friendships through the years.
He is survived by his loving sister, Katheryn N. Chasse of Falmouth, MA, his loving son, Matthew C. Nephew (Shannon) of Plattsburgh, NY, his daughter, Sara Kirby (Pat) of Montpelier, VT and his son, Benjamin Nephew (Stephanie) of Westborough, MA. He leaves behind several grandchildren, Christopher Nephew and Barrett Miller, Margaret and Caroline Kirby, Gavin and Aiden Nephew. He is also survived by one niece, Marni MacPhail of Carver, MA, one nephew, Daniel Nephew (Maureen) of Needham, one sister-in-law, Alice Hoffman of Aiken, SC, and great nieces and great nephews, Maxwell MacPhail, Tatum Wilson, Jacob Wilkson, Logan Drumm, and Julia Nephew.
The family would like to thank the amazing staff at Pine Harbour Assisted Living for their incredible care and companionship over the last several years and the comfort and love that both they and Hospice of the North Country provided in his last days.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the North Country and/or Pine Harbour Assisted Living.
