PLATTSBURGH – Joseph Louis Bedard, 97, formerly of Champlain, passed away Friday, May 17, 2024, at Meadowbrook Healthcare Facility.

He was born in Champlain on February 8, 1927, the son of George and Beatrice (Robert) Bedard.  He married Rita Marie Cote on October 6, 1984, at Sacred Heart Church in Chazy, who passed away December 23, 2022.

Joseph Louis devoted most of his life to farming.  He grew up on the family farm and later cared for his own farm until about 5 years ago.  Louis enjoyed playing pinochle and was a long-time member of the North Clinton County Square Dance Club.  He also enjoyed telling stories about his historic home, "Dewey Tavern."  Dewey Tavern was a stagecoach stop and was occupied by military forces from both sides during the war of 1812.  Louis and Rita hosted several reenactments of historical events on the grounds around their home.

Joseph Louis is survived by a sister, Blanche Laurin of Champlain, and a brother, Joseph Maurice of San Diego, CA and several nieces and nephews.

Joseph Louis was predeceased by his siblings Georgette Boutin, Joseph Henry, Joseph Leo, and Arthur Bedard

Joseph Louis Bedard was a life-long member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.  Visitation will be held Thursday, May 23rd from 1pm to 2pm at St. Mary's Church in Champlain, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 pm.  Burial will be Sacred Heart Cemetery in Chazy.
