PLATTSBURGH – Leon G. Gennett, Jr, 96, formerly of Tom Miller Road, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, October 29, 2020 at Meadowbrook Healthcare Facility, with his family by his side.
He was born April 29, 1924, son of Leon G. and Ella (Bushey) Gennett, Sr. in St. Albans Vermont.
He married Marie Magdelaine Laramie on October 15, 1949 in Chazy, New York. After marriage, they resided in Rouses Point for a few years and then moved to Marie's family home in Chazy. They downsized to an apartment on the Tom Miller Rd. for the latter years of their marriage.
Shortly after graduating from St. Albans High School, he began working for the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, retiring in 1981 after more than 30 years of service. Leon was an accomplished pianist and organist. He played with dance bands in the late 40's and early 50's. He served as church organist at Sacred Heart Parish in Chazy for many years. He enjoyed gardening as well as many organ/piano duets with Marie, entertaining family and friends with his organ virtuosity and traveling to the Maine coast. He especially enjoyed visiting their numerous nieces and nephews who they treated as their children. Alone with Marie, he was an active member of the Northern New York American Canadian Genealogical Society. He also enjoyed helping Marie with many projects while she was the Chazy Town Historian. Marie left him physically in 2016.
Leon was predeceased by his parents, his wife Marie and sister Janice Hogan, sisters-in-law Josephine Laramie, Bertha Lee and Helen Laramie, brothers-in-law Bill Hogan, George Lee and J. Walter Laramie.
He is survived by brother-in-law George Laramie and nieces and nephews David (Elizabeth S.) Hogan, Martha (Kenneth) Coccaro, Michael (Josephine) Hogan, Jeffery Hogan, Charles Lee, Mary Lee Desimone, Kathleen Lee, Walter (Patricia) Laramie, Clara (Richard) Daujotas, Joseph (Charlotte) Laramie, J. William Laramie and Todd Laramie as well as many grand, great grand and great great grand nieces and nephews.
He was one of the kindest and gentlest man that ever lived. He was never heard to refer to another in derogatory terms.
After losing Marie, he moved to 260 Lake St., Rouses Point where he enjoyed the last four years of his life. His health failed him and he resided at Meadowbrook Healthcare Facility since June.
There will be a graveside service on Tuesday, November 3 rd at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Chazy.
