Luther Asch Weisman was born on March 1st, 1941, to Esther and Charles Weisman in Sunnyside, Queens. Luther grew up surrounded by many aunts, uncles and cousins-believing that Fathers only had brothers and that Mothers only had sisters, as his mother was one of four sisters and his father one of four brothers. Luther always remarked on his mother’s resilience, not just in part from raising two sons, Luther and his younger brother Ira, but in having survived polio.

After high school, Luther attended and graduated from Northeastern University with degrees in History and Philosophy. He was drafted into the Army in 1966; shortly thereafter, he was deployed to Vietnam. He spent fifteen months in Vietnam as an Army Intelligence Analyst. Luther’s tour in Vietnam ended in 1967. He was awarded the following commendations: National Defense Service Medal, Aircraft Crewman’s Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Medal, and Army Commendation Medals.

Upon his honorable discharge from the army, he returned to NYC where he subsequently met his future wife (Linda), of 56 years, as they both worked in advertising. They married in 1970. In 1974, Luther completed his master’s degree at NYU, with the help of the GI Bill and soon thereafter moved to Plattsburgh, NY.

Luther taught at Stafford Middle School for Twenty-eight years. He taught both Technology (Wood Shop) and Social Studies. He was known for his sense of humor and kindness towards both students and teachers, often demonstrating his affection towards others in the awarding of endearing nicknames. He cared deeply for the underdog (being a lifelong Mets fan.) Luther was a true people person, loving to make people laugh. He was a loyal friend to many-within tight-knit communities in both Plattsburgh, and Prince Edward Island, where he and his family spent summers for over 50 years.

Luther loved his family. He instilled a strong work ethic in his children and a calling to help others. He was a reader, a runner, a woodworker, a photographer, a puzzler, and a music lover-from opera to Pink Floyd. He was also loved by many. We will miss you Luther and will look for you in PEI sunsets and in the feeding of wild animals, in particular crows and foxes.

Luther is survived by his wife, Linda and his three children Charlie (Caroline), Ellis, and Margo (Robert), and his four grandchildren, Lola, Rosie, Flora and Judah.

Luther passed away on Sunday July 26th, 2026. Special thanks go to the staff, nurses and aides at the Vilas Home, and more recently at the Plattsburgh Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Thanks to Dr. Enciu, nurses and aides at CVPH in Progressive and Comfort Care. They are especially kind and hardworking.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, September 5th, 2026 from 1:00 to 3:00pm with a service and military honors at 2:45pm at the R.W. Walker Funeral home, 69 Court St. Plattsburgh, NY.
