Obituary

Major Margaret C. George, 73, of Charlene Drive, died peacefully at her home on July 2, 2012, surrounded by her loving family and with the aid of Hospice of the North Country. She was born on October 30, 1938 in Fall River, MA, the daughter of John and Filomena (Moniz) Mello. Major Margaret retired from active service as a minister in The Salvation Army in 2001. During her career, she served alongside her husband, Major Edgar C. George, in various appointments in New York, including: Cohoes, Herkimer, Plattsburgh, Massena, Elmira, Ogdensburg, and Gloversville. After retiring from The Salvation Army, Margaret and her husband settled in Plattsburgh where she coordinated the Soup Kitchen at The Salvation Army for 4 years. She was employed by the Beekmantown Central School district where she worked as a Teachers Aid. Margaret was very active in the Turnpike Wesleyan Church where she gave leadership to several programs and enjoyed weekly worship and fellowship. Margaret had many hobbies, including cooking, sewing, and crafts. She loved working with children and playing Santa for children at Christmas time. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Major Edgar C. George; her six children and their spouses, Majors Edgar C. & Barbara A. George, Jr., of Mountainside, NJ; Lena & Larry Wicks, of Bellingham, MA; John & Robyn George, of Kansas City, MO; Majors Donald & Paula Spencer, of Boyertown, PA; Mary & Glen Cutter, of Plattsburgh, NY; and Cheryl George, of Bellingham, MA; a sister Arlene Mello of Fall River, MA; as well as 12 grandchildren. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 5, at the R. W. Walker Funeral Home, 69 Court Street, Plattsburgh. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, July 6, at the Turnpike Wesleyan Church, 2224 Military Turnpike, Plattsburgh followed by interment at the West Plattsburgh Union Cemetery. Lt.-Colonel Joseph Bassett will preside. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center and/or Hospice of the North Country.
