Mary
Mason
February 13, 1923 – November 15, 2021
PLATTSBURGH – Mary Allen Mason, our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and good friend to many, passed away Monday, November 15, 2021 after a long life full of love and happiness. She married John Mason Christmas Day 1944 after their long friendship through grade school, high school and college. Most who knew them would agree they were the happiest married couple around.
Mary was known by her closest friends and family for having patience, an open-mind, curiosity and compassion for all. Mary knew how to wear heels and pearls and also put on her jeans and play in the garden. On beautiful summer afternoons she would occasionally share Port and a cigarette on the beach with her best friends. She never forgot a birthday.
Mary was born in Utica, NY February 13, 1923. The daughter of Georgianna Maude (Agnew Sherman) and Harry Douglas Allen. They moved to Plattsburgh when she was 10 years old, graduated from Plattsburgh High School in 1941 and Faxton Hospital School of nursing in 1944. As a registered nurse she was employed by both Ellis Hospital in Schenectady and locally at CVPH. After special training at Roswell Park Hospital in Buffalo, she helped set up the first Dialysis Unit at CVPH in 1968. In addition, Mary filled the role of Chief Nursing Officer for the ICU. After retiring from a successful nursing career, she joined her husband John at their family-owned residential remodeling business in Plattsburgh.
Mary is survived by three children, John Christopher Mason and his wife, Donna of West Hartford, Douglas Mason and his wife, Terrie of Plattsburgh and Susan and her husband, Michael Raymaley of Lake Placid. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Tracy (Mason) Helfrich, Nicole (Mason) Doyle, Rebecca (Getman) Larkin and Sarah Getman. Mary's great-grandchildren are as follows, Tiarran, Adeline and Lucy Doyle, Reid and Jake Helfrich and Eli and Georgie Larkin.
Mary and John had been married 59 years when he passed away. Mary's only sibling Douglas Allen passed away several years ago.
A graveside service will be held at a later date in West Plattsburgh Union Cemetery with a reception following when her remains are returned following her body being donated to the University of Vermont Medical School.
