SCHNECTADY, NY - Michael L. Smart, 64, of Fairview Ave., passed away unexpectedly on Monday, February 2, 2015 at his home, doing something he loved - plowing snow on his 4-wheeler. He was born on November 10, 1950 in Plattsburgh, NY the son of Leon and Harriet (LaForest) Smart. Michael grew up in Champlain, attending St. Mary's School and Champlain Central School. Michael then served our country in the Army Reserves from 1969 to 1975. He worked at Price Chopper for 34 years. Michael was an avid motorcycle enthusiast, even traveling across the country a couple of times by himself. He once rode over 900 miles in one day just to get to his destination, which was home. Mike also enjoyed four-wheeling and doing things for others. He was a tower of strength with the biggest heart for his family, friends and pets. Mike loved helping everyone. He especially enjoyed clearing snow for the whole neighborhood and it was not unusual for Mike to be clearing snow in his t-shirt, a pair of shorts and his work boots. Everyone, including neighbors, police, friends and many just passing by liked to check out this "big guy" snow blowing in his shorts! He will be missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his wife, Elaine (Atwell) Smart whom he married on March 14, 1993; sons, Michael L. Smart Jr. and his domestic partner, Shannen Vadney, of Plattsburgh, Curtis W. Smart and his wife Emmie of Elizabeth City, NC, and Bobby Dalton and his wife Lisa of Scotia, NY; sisters, Barbara Rock and her husband Stan of Plattsburgh and Cynthia Bell and her husband Jeffrey of Newbury, MA; eight grandchildren; his loving pets, Harley, Salem and Babe, and several nieces and nephews. Mike also shared a special brother-like relationship with his cousin, George Tallman and uncle, Vernon LaForest. Michael was predeceased by his parents, and two brothers, Gary Smart and Ronald Smart. There will be no public calling hours and the family will be planning a celebration of Mike's life at a later date.
