Obituary

PLATTSBURGH – Nancy Jane (Dann) Frederick passed away October 22, 2018 at her home. She was born in Mount Kisco, New York on July 29, 1928 to Ralph and Hazel Dann (Lobdell), the oldest sister to younger brothers, Kenneth and Peter. She grew up in Katonah, New York and summered at the Lobdell family farm in Saranac as a young child. Later she would move to Saranac with her young family and husband, Peter Frederick, living there most of her adult life.

Nancy had a keen mind, a searching curiosity and a strong sense of justice. A member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, she was proud of her connections there, of her many friends in the surrounding communities and those far away. She was a master gardener, an avid political junky and general agitator for the greater good.   She also spent much time researching her family history as amateur genealogist.

Nancy received her education degree from SUNY New Paltz. She taught first grade upon graduation in Hawaii, moving back to the mainland after a year to marry. In addition to raising her four children, she became an ESL teacher at the Clinton Correctional Facility from 1981 to 1995. She said the one thing of which she was most proud, her work to free David Wong, an inmate housed at the Facility wrongly accused of murdering a fellow inmate.

Nancy truly believed in the power of democracy and the importance of speaking out for those less fortunate, or those least represented. She was dismayed as she watched from her living room the changing landscape of politics in the United States and many nights went to bed believing that justice would win out. We can only hope that she has some pull, even now.

She is predeceased in death by her father, mother and two brothers, as well as her two daughters, Lisa Frederick and Susan Frederick, as well as a nephew Kevin Dann. Her survivors include sister-in-law, Barbara Dann (co-matriarch); son, Peter Frederick and partner Jori Darrah; daughter Jamie Foley and husband Steven; nephews and nieces, Michael (Leslie), Billy (Kathy), Sharon and Jimmy Dann; Eleanor and John Dann, as well as Gail (Zachary) Smart. Her grandchildren include: Thomas Pagano, Saneun McHaley Foley, Cyle Wood, Ryelyn McKay, Jason Pantoja, Ashlee Negley and Jamie Cobb; great grandchildren, Kate, Ella, Justin, Asher, Hazel, Lisa, Brayden, Sheamus, Katherine, Brooklyn, Ivy and Evelyn.

Many thanks to the very caring staff at Hospice of the North Country, especially her nurses Becky and Katie.
