Phyllis J.
Maggy
June 28, 1936 – June 15, 2021
Phyllis June Maggy, 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 15, 2021.
She was born on June 28, 1936 in Dannemora, NY, the daughter of the late Philip and Lucy (Rushford) Kennedy. Phyllis was the youngest of five children.
Phyllis graduated from Dannemora HS in 1954. She received a BS in Home Economics from Plattsburgh State University Teachers College in 1958 and later a Certificate in Elementary Education.
Phyllis taught home economics at Ballston Spa Jr/Sr. HS from 1958-1959. She then taught Grade 1 at Peru Central until 1962 when her first child was born. Phyllis continued to substitute for the next 10 years at St. Joseph's School, Saranac and Dannemora Elementary and HS. She returned to teaching Grade 3 full time at Dannemora Elementary School when her youngest child Mark, was in her class! She retired from teaching December 1995.
On June 25, 1960, Phyllis married the love of her life, Leo Maggy. Phyllis was the beloved mother to four children, Michael (Cheryl), Marty (Barb) and Mark (Stacey) all of Plattsburgh and Shelley (Jim) Beaudoin of Malta, NY. She was Nana to Allison (Alex), Kyle (Hana) Maggy, Ethan (Catherine), Emily and Sarah Beaudoin, Mitchell (Brooke) Maggy and Ashley and Matthew Maggy. Nana was eagerly awaiting the birth of her first great-grandchild in July. "Pudy" loved all of her nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and all of her great-great nieces and nephews.
Phyllis enjoyed frequent interactions with her extended family. She was known for her short conversations and "quick hang-ups"! All will miss her presence at our celebrations and events.
Phyllis was active in St. Joseph's Church, the prayer line, soup committee and post funeral reception committee. She was a past member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Senior Citizens Club, NYS Retired Teacher's Association and CVCR. Phyllis loved reading, puzzles and puzzle books, her CBS "programs", quilting and swimming at Chazy Lake and the YMCA.
Phyllis and Leo were able to travel after her retirement to Montana, Alaska, Florida, Maine (her lobster!), Ireland, Colorado and especially Hilton Head, SC. They also took a "few" trips to the casino.
Her favorite place on earth was their home on Chazy Lake where the family was able to live every summer; moving in the day after school ended and moving out the day before school started. It was a wonderful time with all the aunts, uncles, cousins
and Chazy Lake families. Her children greatly appreciate those special years of freedom and nature at the lake.
Along with her parents, Phyllis was predeceased by her siblings, Philip Kennedy, Lucille "Ceci" Haley, Jerry Kennedy and Arlene "Denie" Patnode, along with her beloved brothers-in-law, Russell Haley and Francis "Sonny" Patnode and nephew, Russell Haley, Jr.
There will be no public calling hours.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at 12:00pm at St. Joseph's Church in Dannemora. Committal prayers and burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Phyllis may be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Youth Group, St. Joseph's Catholic Daughters, or the Dannemora Fire Department.
