Ray L.
Devins
September 16, 1953 – May 25, 2026
West Plattsburgh American Legion
1:00 - 5:00 pm (Eastern time)
Raymond Leo Devins, 72, passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a family, countless friends, and a community that will never quite be the same without him around to keep everyone laughing.
Born on September 16, 1953, Ray was the son of Raymond and Evelyn Aubin Devins. He attended Beekmantown Central School and quickly became known for his quick wit, sense of humor, and ability to make friends wherever he went.
On September 8, 1973, Ray married Cathy Munson. Together they raised their children, Danielle and Matt, and built a life centered around family, sports, hard work, and plenty of laughter. Although Ray and Cathy later divorced, they remained good friends throughout the years. Their children and grandchildren were always the top priority, and family remained at the center of Ray’s life.
At a young age, Ray began working for Modern Neon Sign Company. In 1977, he bought the business and spent the rest of his career building not only signs, but a reputation as one of the hardest-working men around. Ray believed there was no problem that couldn’t be fixed with hard work, determination, and maybe a few colorful words along the way.
Ray had a huge heart and was always there when someone needed help. Whether it was lending a hand, offering advice, or simply making someone laugh when they needed it most, he was the kind of man people could always count on.
His greatest pride in life was his family. He never missed a sporting event for Danielle or Matt and could usually be found in the stands cheering louder than anyone else. Before basketball games, officials were often greeted with Ray’s famous reminder: “If you’ve got any questions on the calls, just look at me and I’ll tell you the correct one.” Another favorite saying of his was, “At first I thought I was wrong… but I was mistaken,” which perfectly captured Ray’s sense of humor and personality.
Ray lived by the motto: “Live for today — whatever tomorrow brings will bring.” And he truly did. He worked hard, laughed often, helped people whenever he could, and enjoyed every chance he got to spend time with family and friends.
He was active for many years with the Chazy Lions Club and spent countless hours with the Chazy Athletic Association while his kids were growing up. After retirement, Ray enjoyed spending time with his friends at St Armands Service, where stories were shared, problems were solved, and a little “BS-ing” was considered part of the daily routine.
Ray also made his well-known appearances at Bobby’s Lounge, where friends always knew a good laugh was coming once he walked through the door. Family and friends often joked that Ray was the true local celebrity of the North Country. In fact, it was said that Ben Stiller once joked that the highlight of filming Escape at Dannemora was meeting local legend Ray Devins at Bobby’s Lounge.
Ray is survived by his daughter Danielle Brown, her husband Charles Brown, and their children Serena and Catrena; his son Matt Devins and wife Karissa, and their children Adelyn and Stetson.
He is also survived by his former wife and lifelong friend, Cathy Munson Devins; and his siblings: Mary Garcia and husband Fernando; Louella Bordeau and husband Rodney; Audrey Munson and husband Richard; Alfred Devins and wife Lynn; Gordon Devins; and John Devins and wife Sue; and several, nieces and nephews.
Ray was predeceased by his parents; his mother-in-law and father-in-law; his fiancé, Sherl Drollette; and his sister-in-law, Tanya Devins.
Ray will be remembered for his humor, loyalty, work ethic, big heart, and the way he could make people smile wherever he went. He loved his family fiercely, treasured his friendships, and left behind memories and stories that will be shared for generations.
He will be deeply missed and impossible to forget.
A Celebration of Ray’s life will be celebrated at the West Plattsburgh American Legion, Rand Hill Road, on Saturday, May 30th from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
