Plattsburgh – Robert John Kasper, 91, passed away on October 4th at Meadowbrook Nursing Home, with his wife by his side.
Robert was born in Schenectady, NY on December 30th, 1931 to Frank Kasper and Katherine Amlaw. He attended CBA H.S. in Albany, NY. He attended Sienna College, St. Michaels College, and received a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies at SUNY Plattsburgh.
He met his future wife, Lillian, on a blind date in Schenectady, NY, where she was a student nurse. They were married for 68 years.
Bob served in the United States Navy, Sea Bees, stationed in various places around the world, from Naples, Italy to Norfolk, Virginia, and was in Guantanamo Bay during the Cuban missile crisis. He was acknowledged for his work in Suicide Prevention among military personnel in Corpus Christi, Texas. He retired after 20 years as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. He then worked as a Veterans Counselor in Clinton County, NY, retiring in 1994. He belonged to the VFW, Kiwanis, Coastal Bend Mental Health Association, Texas Suicide Prevention Inc., Clinton County Mental Health Association, Friends of Keeseville, and the Retired Navy Shooters Association.
He was an avid photographer, owning the "Through the Looking Glass" photo and framing business. He enjoyed hiking, spending many hours hiking the trails of the Adirondacks searching for the perfect landscape to photograph. He enjoyed academic research, dancing, bowling and genealogy. He was a fan of the Dodgers both in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, and the NY Giants. He loved rifle and pistol shooting in the Navy, being a national champion winning many awards, and taught youth marksmanship.
Robert is survived by his wife, Lillian Kasper, daughters Mary Kay Kasper and Theresa Kasper, son Michael Kasper, grandchildren Jessica Miller-Kramer and Connor Miller, and great-granddaughter Eowyn Kramer.
Services will be held in Newcomb, NY at a date to be determined.
