PLATTSBURGH- Robert "Smitty" Smith, 81, of Truman Avenue, passed away November 30, 2018.
He was born on April 2, 1937 in Plattsburgh the son of Leslie and Alberta (Vidock) Smith.
Robert attended Plattsburgh High School until 1956 and then entered into the United States Marine Corp. During his service, he was a part of the 1958 U.S. Marine Invasion of Lebanon. Following his Honorable Discharge in 1959, Robert worked in sales for the Lavin Candy Company in Plattsburgh, retiring after over 43 years of service.
In his spare time, Robert enjoyed visiting and socializing with all the friends who he met during his travels throughout Upstate New York. He also enjoyed playing cards with his buddies, was a lifelong fan of the New York Giants, and in his later years, enjoyed watching endless hours of golf.
Survivors include his four children, Laurie Sparks of Woodbury, TN, Cathie Smith of Plattsburgh, Martha Poland (Bruce) of Morrisonville, and Christopher Smith (Amy) of Pittsfield, MA; grandchildren, Jeremy Sparks, Alyssa McAlister (Mason), Kyle Smith, Michael LaBarge (Nuchy), Nikki LaBarge, Lorri LaBarge, Christopher Smith, Jr., and Colton Smith; brother, Richard (Josie) Smith; sisters, Dorothy Beckman and Judy Satterly; and several nieces and nephews.
Robert was predeceased by his former wife, Anne Smith; sister, Veronica Smith; and brother-in-law, Richie Beckman.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A funeral service will follow at 5:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
Burial will take place at a later date in St. Mary's of the Lake Cemetery on Cumberland Head.
Donations in his memory may be made to the North Country Honor Flight.
