Obituary

Robert "Bob" Wood, 73, of Plattsburgh, died on December 9, 2024, after a months-long fight with lung cancer.

Bob was born in Plattsburgh on May 13, 1951, to William Wood and Jewell Mitchell. He graduated from Plattsburgh High School in 1969 and met his future wife, Bonnie Branham, shortly after. Bob and Bonnie were married in July 1971 and welcomed their son, Robin, in December. The two were wed until Bonnie's death in November 1988.

Bob was employed at Diamond International for several years before entering a second career in maintenance at Altona Correctional Facility, from which he retired in 2013.

Aside from his family, Bob's greatest love was sports. He was an avid fan of the New York Giants, UConn Huskies women's basketball, the WNBA, and women's soccer. But above all, Bob's passion was auto racing. He competed alongside his brother-in-laws at Airborne Speedway and other tracks throughout the 1970s and 80s before supporting his son's racing career at race tracks across the northeastern U.S. and Canada for over 25 years.

Bob is survived by his son, Robin (Nicole) Wood of Plattsburgh; grandson, Tyler Wood of Plattsburgh; his brothers, Bill "Skip" (Carlene) Wood of Peru, Len (Joanne) Wood of Peru, and John Wood of Brighton, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Bonnie; his parents; and a brother, Richard.

The family extends its gratitude to the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center for caring for Bob in his final months of life.

At Bob's request, there will be no services. He will be interred alongside his wife at Whispering Maples Memorial Gardens in Plattsburgh.
