Obituary

Plattsburgh--Ronald H. Hobson, 91, of Plattsburgh, passed away peacefully at home on December 11, 2024 with his wife and daughter by his side.

He was born in Portland, Oregon on Feb. 8, 1933 to Howard and Mildred (Mathiesen) Hobson. Ron attended West Point and served in the Army from 1951-1953. He decided a career in the Army wasn't for him, much to his father's chagrin and his soon to be wife's delight. He attended Columbia University, earning a BS in Industrial Engineering and Fairleigh Dickinson University earning an MBA. He married Ann Lawson on Sept. 18, 1954 at The Little Church Around the Corner in NYC. Their 70-year marriage was a testament to showing how unconditional love and respect were the cornerstone of a happy marriage. Ron worked in business at various companies throughout his career. He found his passion in teaching at SUNY Plattsburgh after moving to Mooers from NJ in 1975. Ron was the assistant dean for the School of Business and Economics, served as Director for Lifelong Learning and was instrumental in the School of Business receiving NYS accreditation. He was a consultant for the Intl. Joint Venture Consultants conducting various business strategy workshops in Russia. He also traveled to Budapest, Hungary where he trained, taught and advised students, faculty and businesses in Total Quality Management. He will be remembered as a hardworking, kind, considerate, and dedicated teacher. Ron and Ann were ahead of their time, and lived 40 happy and productive years off the grid in their solar home, growing their own food, and raising various animals; a low carbon footprint was the ultimate goal. He wasn't the most socialable guy and didn't laugh at jokes he didn't get, but he was always ready to help family, friends and neighbors. He was a dedicated and loving husband and father (and so very proud of his daughters). He taught his girls (and students) that life's lessons built "moral fiber" and that you can do anything! He was a fighter for justice and advocated for the earth and for those unable to advocate for themselves. He joined the fight to keep a planned nuclear waste incinerator from being built in Ellenburg, drove for Meals on Wheels and served on the ARC Board.

Survivors include his wife Ann Hobson, daughter Chris (Joseph) Whalen, son in law Dan Szot, granddaughters Connie (Nate) Hammaker, Casey (Billy) Szot, grandson Joey Whalen and Great-granddaughter Nora Hammaker. He is also survived by his brother Robert and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his parents and beloved daughter Brook Hobson.
