Russell J. Trombly passed away peacefully at his home in Chazy, NY on Saturday, March 28, 2015. Russell was born in Chazy on July 1, 1922; the son of Leon and Martha (Mousseau) Trombly. He attended Chazy Central Rural School, graduating class of 1941 . After graduation he worked on the family farm and Hearts Delight Farm now known as the Miner Farm until 1948. In May of 1948 Russell became a New York State trooper assigned to Troop B, covering a territory from Lake Champlain to Lake Ontario. Russell, along with his brother Richard were legends of their time often called to track and apprehend law breakers in the north country. Among the many highlights of his 28-year career as a trooper was escorting Jacqueline Kennedy and her children during a ski vacation to Lake Placid. He participated in the manhunt in the Adirondacks for the killer Robert F. Garrow; the largest manhunt at the time, in New York State history. After retiring from the New York State Police Russell continued in public service and was appointed Clinton County Sheriff by Governor Hugh Carey in 1977. Russell ran five terms overseeing the building of the new Clinton County jail. In 1990 he served as President of the New York State Sheriff Association. Russell retired in 1999 at the age of 76. Left to cherish many beautiful memories are Mary, his wife of 63 years, and children Ronald and Michele of Reno, NV, Wayne of Chazy, Debbie and Bill Smith of Virginia Beach, VA, Jan of Virginia Beach, VA and Daniel of Reno, NV. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Matthew Smith of Vail, CO and Zachary Trombly of Reno, NV and one surviving sister, Marie Robinson of Hamilton, NY. He was preceded in death by his brothers Harold, Leo, Clarence, Edward, Maynard, Clevice, Arnold, Richard , and sister Eva Hackett . Russell took pride in his family and they meant everything to him. Russell was a life member of the Elks Club in Plattsburgh, the Association of Former New York State Troopers, the NYS Police Benevolent Association, Honorary Commander of the Plattsburgh Air Force Security Police and the 380th Air Police Squadron. Russell enjoyed hunting, taking trips deep in the Canadian wilderness led by Indian guides, ice fishing, and model trains. He also took pleasure in raising peacocks, ornamental pheasants, and registered German Shepherd dogs. The family would like to thank the community for its love and support over the years. These memorials will help to benefit the children here in Clinton County. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church in Chazy. Burial will take place in the spring in the parish cemetery.
