MOOERS – Ruth E. Colgan, 89, formerly of Hemmingford Road, passed away peacefully, October 15, 2024 with the comfort of her daughter by her side.

Ruth was born in a small farm house in Mooers on June 12, 1935, the only child of Charlie and Edna (McKnight) Higgins.

Ruth attended Mooers High School and went on to attend SUNY Plattsburgh where she received her Master's Degree in Elementary Education.  She began her career at West Chazy Elementary and then continued on to Mooers Elementary for over 30 years.  Even in retirement, Ruth continued to teach Kindergarten music.

Ruth married the love of her life Wiley Colgan on July 12, 1958 and together they shared 48 wonderful years together until his passing on December 2, 2006.

She was also a talented and gifted organist and her love of music began at a young age.  For over 20 years, Ruth played the organ at Sunday morning services at many local churches including the Mooers Methodist Church and The Ellenburg Wesleyan Church.  Ruth also held many other roles in the church including choir director and vacation bible school director.  Her musical talent and faithfulness will forever be remembered in the numerous churches and events she has played for.  Anyone who knew Ruth could see her sitting on the organ bench playing from deep within her heart.

Ruth enjoyed her tea parties with her girls, attending basketball games and going to family reunions with Wiley's family.  Her greatest love was her family and always looked forward traveling to Maine each summer with her husband and grandson, Wiley.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Lynn Colgan;  son, Mark (Christine) Colgan;  step-sister, Joyce Phair;  and grandson, Wiley.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband and daughter-in-law, Jennie.

The family wishes to thank the Skilled Nursing Unit for all the love and care they provided to Ruth over the past 12 years.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 25th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home in Plattsburgh.  A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Mooers Wesleyan Church.

Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery in Mooers.
