COLCHESTER, VT - Sandra Anne Patricia Whitehouse Foley died on February 1, 2020 in the loving care of Green Mountain Nursing and Rehabilitation staff in Colchester, Vermont. She will be profoundly missed by her family and by anyone who had the great pleasure of knowing her. Sandra was truly, one-of-a-kind.
Born in Verdun, Quebec on November 9, 1934, into a family of three sisters and one brother, she and her sister Barbara, were raised by their paternal grandparents. Immersed in city life, she grew up in a tightly-knit neighborhood and told stories of hanging out on fire escapes with friends, of being called in for dinner through open windows in summertime.
Sandra married Robert Foley in 1952, and with their three young sons, Bobby, Steven and Jeffrey, they emigrated to Hudson, New York. They would eventually settle on Cumberland Head, New York, completing their family with two additional sons, Andy and John. Here, Sandra reigned as matriarch to her immediate kin and to those who drifted in and out of her preview. She was an adoptive mother to many. Her music-filled home, buzzing with activity was always open. Everyone was welcomed, whether broken or un-broken, they were warmly supported, celebrated.
Sandra graduated from Smith College with a degree in Women's Studies, a staunch feminist. She was best known as an accomplished multi-medium artist, with varied works of oil portraiture, landscapes and murals, complex pencil drawings and print-making. Other occupations included: Saint Bernard breeder, crisis center counselor, Kurn Hattin housemother, senior center director, set designer and teacher.
Sandra is pre-deceased in death by her parents, Margaret Thelma Brady and Kjeldur James Whitehouse, along with her sister Barbara, brother Louie and son, Bobby. Her survivors include sisters, Doreen and Mary; sons, Steven, Jeffrey, Andy and John, along with their respective wives; Jamie, Kay, Jennifer and Tanya. She leaves eight grandchildren: Thomas, Saneun, Ryelyn, West, Johnna, Jaqueline, Eli, and Drew. She also leaves seven great-grandchildren: Kate, Ella, Asher, Hazel, Sheamus, Evelyn, and Max; as well as, a niece, her namesake, and many nephews.
A celebration of life and burial time will be announced at a later date.
Safe travels to you dear Sandra.
