PLATTSBURGH – Shirley A. LaPorte, 88, passed away Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at Meadowbrook Nursing Facility.
She was born in Plattsburgh on March 20, 1933 the daughter of Ross and Nora (Houle) Provost.
Shirley was a childcare provider at the Plattsburgh Air Force Base Child Development Center where she retired in 1995 when the base closed. She loved more than anything being a grandmother, she traveled many miles to watch her grandchildren play football, soccer, baseball and hockey. Shirley also enjoyed traveling to see her children in such places as Europe, Alaska, Texas, California and Cape Cod. She loved living in her home on Cumberland Head for nearly 30 years and tending to her extensive flower gardens. Shirley also enjoyed crocheting, knitting and her Dunkin Donuts coffee.
Survivors include her children, Brenda and Todd Heywood, Michael and Sharon (Basso) Smith, David and Susan (Lagasse) Smith, Joann and Richard Kirby, Lori Cantell, Curtis LaPorte, Gail Bruso; brothers, Jerry Provost, Carl and Diana Provost; sister Myrtle and Norm Haikkila; grandchildren Todd and Taylor Heywood. Joseph Smith, Brandy Smith, Wade Smith, Amanda and Doug Kenny, Conner and Victoria Smith, Mckinley and Abigail Kirby, Tina and Chimmie Lovett, Justin Cantell, Tracy (Cirillo) Guest, George and Zetra Bruso, Kim Bruso, Nikki Bruso; 15 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents, brothers Alfred, Donald and Ross Provost; sisters Theresa Holmes, Marie and her husband Arkley Frenyea; grandsons Joseph Cirillo and Army Staff Sergeant Jason M. Cantell.
A celebration of life will be private for the family.
