Shirley D.
Pombrio
March 26, 1937 – February 3, 2025
Shirley D. Pombrio, 87, of Altona NY, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2025 at the CVPH Skilled Nursing Facility. She was diagnosed with a rare non-small cell lung cancer in 2018 and faced it with courage, determination and never accepted defeat.
She was the only child of the late Edward L. and Evelyn (LaFlore) Deso. On April 27, 1957 Shirley married her childhood sweetheart Sherman E. Pombrio. Together they raised their 4 children Starr, Sheila, Mark and Sheldon on the family dairy farm in Altona.
She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was proud of the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. She led by example by instilling the value of a strong work ethic, a good education, a love of animals and the importance of gratitude and acts of kindness. She was the glue that held it all together as the farm business manager and worked beside Sherm every day milking cows, maintaining spotless milking equipment, doing field work, commandeering the family workforce into action, running errands and always managed to cook a delicious meal including dessert for the family table. In her "free" time she enjoyed baking, gardening and family gatherings. She loved long chats and visits with her cousin Nancy, who was like a sister. No visit was complete without a drive around the North Country in search of a good Michigan.
She was small in stature, but a force to be reckoned with. She was simply amazing and will be deeply missed by Sherm, her children and her grandchildren Shelby, Tyler, Lacey and Alex as well as her cousin Nancy. She was predeceased by two cherished grandchildren Ethan (March 2022) and Lauren (May 2023). Shirley is also survived by her 104 year old Uncle Doug, several cousins, nieces and nephews. She leaves behind her precious felines Luke & Lydia, her grand dogs Nora & Remy and great-grand dogs Sophie, Hank, Jessie Rae and Duck.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the CVPH Skilled Nursing Facility for their excellent care, kindness and compassion during her stay. We also extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation to our family, friends and neighbors who generously supported us with visits, calls, texts, culinary delights, but most importantly their love over the past months.
At Shirley's request there are no services. Memorial donations may be made in her name to the CVPH Skilled Nursing Facility.
Arrangements are in the care of R.W. Walker Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 69 Court Street Plattsburgh, NY.
