PLATTSBURGH – Verda Norcross died on March 23, 2019 at the age of 103.  She was born in the area of Altona, N.Y. on March 4, 1916 the daughter of George and Calista (Trudeau)  Smart.  She graduated from Ellenburg Depot High School in 1935 and from Plattsburgh Normal School in 1938.  She later went on to get her permanent teaching degree.

She married Ralph Norcross on June 29th, 1940 in Baldwinsville, N.Y. and they moved to Cadyville, N.Y. where they resided for nearly 50 years.  She retired from the Saranac Central School District after teaching elementary school for 26 years.

Verda was a member of the Town of Plattsburgh Youth Commission, a Cub Scout Den Mother and was a member of the Cadyville Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary which she helped establish.  She was a long time member of the St. James Catholic Church in Cadyville.

Survivors include her two sons: Darry and his wife Beverly of Cadyville and Michael and his wife Diane of Barton, N.Y.

Six grandchildren include Stephen (Susan) Broadwell of Peru, Sara Broadwell (William Corcoran) of Morrisonville, Kevin (Katie) Norcross of Plattsburgh, Brian (Heather) Norcross of Chazy, Chad (Michelle) Norcross of Barton, N.Y. and Tana-Jean Norcross of Muncie, Indiana.  She is also survived by ten great grandchildren, Kelly (Ian) Murphy, Tim Broadwell, Kaden Cringle, Kye and Kali Norcross, Ben and Cale Norcross and Alexander, Emma, and Olivia Norcross.  She also had one great-great grandchild Lydia Murphy as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Ralph, her daughter Sue and son-in-law Keith Broadwell and a great granddaughter, Makenna Hope Corcoran, as well as three sisters and a brother, Addie Passino, Edna Smart, Sabina Carter and her brother Fred Smart.

Calling hours will be held at R. W. Walker Funeral Home on Friday, March 29 from 5:00pm-7:00pm and the funeral will be on Saturday, March 30 at 10:00am in the St. James Church in Cadyville, N.Y. Burial will take place in the Cadyville Protestant Cemetery.
