PLATTSBURGH- Virgil "Jack" Ratta, 87, of Freedom Drive, Plattsburgh, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2019 at Adirondack Health Center.
He was born in Chazy, NY on August 18, 1932 the son of Julius and Bertha (Martin) Ratta. Jack graduated from Chazy Central Rural School June 22, 1951.
He entered the US Army on July 3, 1951 as a PVT and Retiring Honorably after 22 years as a 1st Sargent. Some of the courses taken while in the Service: High Speed Radio Operator, Radio Teletype Operator, NCO, Area Communications Systems, Company Administration Personnel, Code of Conduct, Types of Discharge and other courses such as on line college courses. Jack earned many medals, commendations, and campaign ribbons. Jack was stationed in Germany, France, Belgium, Korea, Vietnam and the US
After the Military he went to work for the US Postal Service as a Window Supervisor in Plattsburgh then Post Master in Schuyler Falls NY for a total of 18 years, during that time he attended Postal Academy for Postmaster.
Jack was proud to be a foster parent with his wife for many, fostering 55 children between Plattsburgh and Florida.
He was a NY Giants fan, avid reader and loved crossword puzzles.
Survivors include his loving wife of 27 years, Nancy (Paolucci) Ratta of Plattsburgh; his son, Zachery Francis of Plattsburgh; three step-children and their spouses; 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; two sister-in-laws; a brother-in-law, and nieces and nephews in NY and Canada
Jack was predeceased by his parents, a stepchild, and several brothers and sisters
Calling hours will be held Saturday September 7, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 am at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home, with a funeral to follow at 11:00 in the funeral home chapel.
Donations may be made to Clinton County Foster Care Program.
