Obituary

Virginia Ann Kilfoyle, 93, passed away at the UVM Hospital in Plattsburgh NY on August 17, 2024 with her family by her side.

Virginia was born in Rochester, NY on February 12, 1931. An "Army Brat" she moved around the country extensively with her family before going to nursing school in Evanston, IL. After obtaining her nursing degree, she worked in Hawaii, Long Island, San Francisco and several other locations before settling into Plattsburgh with her young daughter, living in historic Greystone Manor on Rt. 9N. She joined the nursing staff of Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in the 1960s. Her career there lasted over 30 years, first as a medical surgical nurse, then in her last decade as a Patient Care Nurse Manager. Her co-workers remember her as tough but fair, a lesson well learned from her military upbringing.

When not nursing she enjoyed listening to music, especially her favorite old Blue Eyes Frank Sinatra, dancing, traveling, cooking, but most of all her home and gardening her vegetable and flower gardens. She took great pride in her appearance and loved shopping for coordinated outfits and keeping her hair and nails in tip top shape.

Virginia was always a no-nonsense force of nature, driven to accomplish and make forward strides. She worked very hard at whatever task was ahead, not always enjoying stopping and smell the roses she helped to blossom.

She suffered a significant brain bleed in 2021 which set her back significantly, but miraculously she bounced back and enjoyed two more years of good if impaired life before a devastating stroke precipitated her ultimate demise. Her family sends great gratitude to all the wonderful nurses and attendants in Vermont and Plattsburgh who offered such great care and empathy for an admired practitioner.

Virginia was the eldest child of Lt. Colonel Frederick L. Coots and Dorothea Vorce Coots. She was predeceased by her sister Nanette Graves and Frederick A Coots. She is survived by her husband David E Kilfoyle, with whom and she would have celebrated 54 years of marriage on August 22, and her daughter Linda Ann Brantley of Amesbury, Massachusetts. She leaves Nanette's children, her niece and nephew Kimberely Balezentis and Jeffrey Graves.

A graveside celebration of her life will be held on Friday, August 30 at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Chazy at 11 a.m.

The family requests that anyone wishing to honor her memory make a donation to UVM or The American Cancer Society.
