Obituary

Virginia “Ginny” Mary Moody, 92, passed away at her home in the early hours of October 11th, surrounded by family. She was born on April 19th, 1934 in a house her father built on a farm in Saint Regis Falls, NY. She was the oldest of 4 children born to Seymour and Elizabeth (Lynch) Catura. During childhood the children worked on the farm, played in the Saint Lawrence River, and had lots of snow to go sledding on with their Saint Bernard, Scarlet, pulling them down the hills. Virginia had many fond memories growing up in the country. She was educated in a small rural schoolhouse, then Madrid School, before attending and graduating from Massena High School. After graduating, she hopped on a train to Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks to work as a waitress and maid for the summer at a popular resort--the first of her many adventures. She married John “Jack” Moody in 1953 and spent decades of her life moving to different places around the world as a Navy officer's wife. They raised 3 children--Nancy, John, and Joan--as they ventured around the globe. She lived in Florida, England, Virginia, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Rhode Island, Australia, Italy, St. Croix, and Vermont, before returning to the North Country where she was from. She enrolled at SUNY Plattsburgh where she earned an art degree while minoring in Canadian Studies. She loved to paint, draw, sculpt, write poetry, and take photographs; everywhere she went, she had her camera in her hand. She continued to travel, taking trips to Canada; St. John, VI; Ireland; Morocco; and a road trip across Europe. She spent her early years working as a secretary at Alcoa and in Florida before becoming a mom and working as a homemaker, taking good care of her children and home. Mom and Dad made many life-long friends in their Navy life.

She taught photography at Clinton Community College and to children in the 4-H Club.

She volunteered at her children's schools, CVPH hospital, SUNY Plattsburgh Art Museum, and was President of the Officer's Wives Club.

She spent much of her later years being active at the YMCA, senior bowling league, yoga, water aerobics, cross country skiing, biking, hiking, participating in the NYS Senior Olympics where she won a medal in race walking.

One of her greatest joys was spending time with her grandchildren, playing with them and being a fun and adventure-seeking grandma.

She was always adventurous, free-spirited, independent, strong-willed, and at times, down-right hilarious!

She is survived by her daughter, Joan (husband David) Foley of Plattsburgh, NY; her son, John Moody (partner Marty Williams) of Glen Ellyn, IL; her grandchildren, Eric Foley and Kaitlyn Foley of Plattsburgh, NY; and her great-granddaughter, Evin Foley, of Plattsburgh, NY.

She was predeceased by her parents, Seymour and Elizabeth Catura; her sisters, Gloria Hayle and Carol Eurto; her brother, John Catura; her husband, Jack Moody; and her daughter, Nancy Moody.

Virginia’s family would like to thank her caregivers, Jess, Lori, Nicole, and Patricia. They not only provided care, “Team Ginny” surrounded her with love and became her extended family.

Rest in peace, Mom.
