Wanda
Sweeney
September 7, 1947 – February 3, 2020
DANNEMORA – Wanda Sweeney, 72, of Gregory Street, passed away peacefully Monday, February 3, 2020 at the CVPH Medical Center.
Born on September 7, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Laura (Gonyea) Buck.
Wanda attended Dannemora High School, graduating in 1966. Following high school she pursued a degree in cosmetology and went on to receive her license.
On September 16, 1978 she married Ronald T. Sweeney at St. Joseph's Church in Dannemora. The two were happily married until his passing on February 7, 2011.
Wanda worked in various fields until her retirement from the Saranac Central School District as a food service worker.
She was a devout Catholic and communicant at St. Joseph's Church in Dannemora. Over the years, she volunteered her time singing in the Choir, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and a member the Bereavement Ministry.
Wanda's favorite pastime was working on crafts and needlework. For many years, she shared her joy of crafting with the Dannemora Home Bureau and most recently the Champlain Valley Quilters Guild of Plattsburgh. She loved to use her talents to not only keep her friends and family warm with quilts, but making them for the less fortunate and donating them to the Mission of Hope program coordinated by Seton Catholic. She also spent a great deal of time making clothes for young girls in other countries hoping each stitch she made by hand would bring joy to someone else's face.
Wanda was one of those people who was making friends. Between her craft groups, church groups, and the various Senior Citizen groups that she belonged to, she seemed to know someone everywhere she went. Everyone knew her for her sense of humor and she was always able to make someone smile. Wanda was truly one of those people who was beautiful on the inside and out.
For many years, Wanda and her husband Ronnie were avid campers spending many nights by the campfire sharing stories, laughing, and telling jokes. In her later years, she spent her quiet times with her cat, Misty, who brought her great joy until her passing in 2018.
Survivors include sister, Sally Yanulavich; brothers-in-law, Joseph LaVarnway and Alfred (Jackie) Sweeney; sister-in-law, Martha Mary Sweeney; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents and husband Ronald, she is predeceased by her sisters, Judy Buck and Phyllis LaVarnway.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020, from 10 to 10:45 am at St. Joseph's Church in Dannemora, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will be in the parish cemetery in the spring.
Donations may be made to Seton Catholic, Mission of Hope or FitzPatrick Cancer Center.
